FIFA WC26 | Ro16: SUI vs COL | 01:30 IST, July 8, 2026

Both teams have been unbeaten in the competition so far and both of them faced African opponents in the Round of 32 with Switzerland facing Algeria and Colombia playing Ghana.

Switzerland was able to win comfortably against an underwhelming Algerian side. Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye were the scorers for the Swiss as they booked their place in the Round of 16. With this win, they also managed to win a World Cup knockout tie after a hiatus of 88 years. Johan Manzambi also impressed, getting an assist. Manzambi has been exceptional for Switzerland with three goals and two assists in this World Cup and is now attracting a lot of interest from top English clubs. Although Algeria had some big chances, Switzerland defended well and the Algerians weren’t clinical enough.

In contrast, Colombia had a fighting match against a defensively solid Ghana. Jhon Arias’s early strike was enough to get Colombia through to the Round of 16. Luis Diaz put one past the Ghanaian goalkeeper but the goal was denied for offside. Diaz was at it again but a sprawling save from Lawrence Ati Zigi denied Colombia an all- important second goal. Colombia kept Ghana pinned in their own half for most of the first half, so much so that they didn’t have even one shot on target in the first 45 minutes. Colombia was superior in every aspect of the game and deservedly went through. Diaz and Daniel Munoz have been key for Colombia in attack. Colombia’s attacking flair has been on display in this World Cup but their defensive solidity has been rarely talked about. The backline of Davinson Sanchez, Jhon Lucumi, Johan Mojica and Daniel Munoz have only conceded a solitary goal in four games and will be tough to break down.

Injury-wise, Switzerland could miss Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez due to a muscle injury while Colombia will miss Jhon Cordoba due to a groin injury.

These two teams have once met at the 1994 World Cup where Colombia got the better of the Swiss. Los Cafeteros have a dangerous attack that can trouble the Swiss defence. Key players for Colombia are Diaz, Jefferson Lerma, Munoz and James Rodriguez.  As for the Swiss, captain Granit Xhaka, Manzambi, Ruben Vargas, Dan Ndoye and Denis Jakaria. Looking at the two teams and their recent form, this would be another tense and tight affair which might go into extra-time and a penalty shootout to decide the outcome. We believe Colombia is marginally ahead and may go on to win on penalties.

Score Prediction: Switzerland 1–1 Colombia | Colombia to win 4–3 on penalties
Venue: BC Place Vancouver, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
