Top 5 Chelsea players to watch in 2022

Chelsea are seen as serious title contenders along with Liverpool and Manchester City for the 2021/22 season. Several experienced and young players in the side have enhanced Chelsea’s chances of getting in the mix for the title. Be it the consistent performances, the ability to stay fit and stick to the manager’s ideas, or to get opportunities in a run of games to impress the boss, the following Chelsea players are the ones to watch in 2022.

Mason Mount

The young English playmaker is probably Chelsea’s most reliable player currently. Mount has been firing since receiving a lengthened run in the first team. He has been quite successful during his run, scoring seven goals for the team and providing his teammates with six assists.

Mount has been pivotal to Thomas Tuchel’s system of player three at the back, which means that the midfield needs to cover a lot of ground and provide quality on the ball. Chelsea’s set-up and Mount’s relationship with Tuchel makes him one to look out for in 2022.

Antonio Rüdiger

Next up is Chelsea’s big defender, Antonio Rüdiger — yet another one who has perfectly taken to Tuchel’s ideas. The German has scored goals from set-pieces and is more than comfortable with the ball when Chelsea are in possession. Rüdiger has two goals to his name so far and three assists in the Premier League.

Chelsea are also heavily reliant on Rüdiger to drive forward with the ball into midfield and forward areas. He has been an immense figure in securing clean sheets, eight of which have come in games he has featured in.

Reece James

Although Tuchel’s wingback choices weren’t certain at the beginning of the campaign, Ben Chilwell and Reece James have since emerged as his favourites for the side. James is crucial to the attacking role that the Chelsea wingbacks have to play in the system Tuchel employs. Having been a forward in his younger days, James relishes the opportunity to get forward and contribute in an attacking sense.

James has been lethal in front of goal this season, scoring four goals — one of the highest tallies for a wingback in the league. He also produces deadly crosses, which have already led to five assists in the league so far.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

The next one is quite a debated player among fans. Callum Hudson-Odoi often provides glimpses of brilliance but is unable to get a consistent run of performances for his club. His numbers have been bleak, to say the least, given he has scored just once so far in the league apart from providing three assists.

However, Hudson-Odoi is young and has a long way to go. A run of games in the league during the 2021/22 campaign—given the injuries and COVID issues—could see the start of him becoming a real player, making him one to watch in 2022.

Édouard Mendy

Lastly, we have the Chelsea goalkeeper, who has been immense for his team’s chances of a title challenge during the 2021/22 season.

Mendy is an imposing presence between the sticks for Chelsea. Not only is he agile and robust when it comes to shot-stopping, he is also more than happy to receive the ball under pressure and play out from the back.

Mendy is currently fourth for the total number of clean sheets in the Premier League, only one behind Aaron Ramsdale and Alisson. However, he does have a few nervy moments in him, which have led to him giving the ball away in dangerous positions, a trait the Chelsea fans would be hoping to see less of in 2022.
