Top 5 Contenders for the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 

As another season of the topmost European competition – the UEFA Champions League (UCL) approaches, fans of all major European clubs would be filled with excitement for one of the biggest prizes in Europe. 

Paris Saint-Germain won two back-to-back UCL trophies and will again be looking to defend their crown. However, there are many European giants looking to get their hands on the prize. 

Here we take a look at the Top 5 contenders who could be the UEFA Champions League winners for the 2026/27 season – 

5. Barcelona 

The five-times Champions League winners Barcelona hasn’t won the title since 2015. Almost a decade later, it remains their foremost priority to win their sixth title. 

They have won back-to-back LaLiga titles and possess a host of talented youth from their famed youth academy La Masia. The likes of Pau Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, Joan Garcia, Gavi and Pedri have returned as World Cup winners but the addition of winger Anthony Gordon and midfield maestro Rodri has further strengthened them. The Blaugrana have also started the new season well, obliterating teams with their attack. 

Their only weakness lies in the striker position where they couldn’t secure the signing of Julián Alvarez from Atlético Madrid. Instead, they had to settle for the signing of an injury-prone Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal which seems more like a panic buy than a well thought out signing. 

Despite their lack of a quality striker, Barcelona will definitely go into this Champions League campaign as one of the favourites for the title. 

4. Bayern Munich

Last season’s semi-finalist and six times champions Bayern Munich are a strong outfit. Bayern last won the title in 2020 and would be eager to reach seventh heaven this time. The Germans gave PSG a run for their money in the two-legged semi-finals tie last season and their front line is one of, if not the best in Europe. 

Bayern are the defending Bundesliga champions, annihilating oppositions with their high energy, quick passing and clinical finishing. Their front three of Luis Diaz, Harry Kane and Michael Olise combined for a whopping 109 goals in all competitions last season with Kane scoring 61 goals, Olise scoring 22 goals and Diaz scoring 26 goals. 

Bayern’s problems lie in the defence department as they are vulnerable at the back. If Bayern can fix their defensive issues and maintain defensive solidity, they could be simply unstoppable. For their history in the Champions League and the fact that they are one of the best attacking teams in Europe, Bayern Munich will remain a firm favourite for the Champions League title this season. 

3. Real Madrid 

The most successful club in Champions League history, Real Madrid have been underwhelming in the competition for the past two seasons. The 15-times champions have struggled for form, dressing room issues and frequently changing coaches over the past season. Last season, they lost to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and ended the season trophyless yet again. 

However, Los Blancos have certainly strengthened their squad with some exciting signings like young winger Yan Diomande, full-backs Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries and defender Ibrahima Konaté. Although they missed the signing of defensive midfielder Rodri, Real Madrid already look like a stronger team this season. 

Their managerial appointment José Mourinho is one of the most experienced and successful coaches in world football who knows how to navigate and win big tournaments. With Vinicius Junior renewing his contract and the likes of big names like Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande now, the European giants have no dearth of talent in their squad. 

Champions League has been the competition where they shine the most and you only count Real Madrid out at your own peril. 

2. Arsenal

Last year’s finalist and Premier League champions Arsenal are one of the strongest teams in the competition this season as well. 

While the other top Premier League teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are undergoing transition, the Gunners have the most settled team with their core of key players intact along with some good signings like winger Christos Tzolis and midfielder Bruno Guimarães. The likes of Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães have already experienced big games in the Champions League and they will go into this season’s Champions League desperate to break the jinx of not winning a single UCL title in their history. 

Arsenal undoubtedly has the best defence in Europe as they showed several times last season. Although they found it difficult to score in the Premier League, in the League stages of the Champions League they ran riot against most clubs and topped the League stage table with eight wins out of eight. Their UCL final loss to PSG was also a close and tight encounter which was decided by penalties. 

Arsenal struggled a bit with creating chances from open play and sometimes even finding the finish. Their front line is decent but as compared to the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid, Barca or PSG their attack lacks the cutting edge and threat. 

Having done really well to reach the semi-finals and final in the previous two years, Arsenal is surely going to be there and thereabouts the deep end of the tournament and maybe go all the way this time. 

1. Paris Saint-Germain 

The two-times Champions League winners now and the current defending champions, PSG are yet again the favourites for the title. Like Arsenal, PSG too has their core intact and also added a mix of experienced and young talent. Although they let go of winger Bradley Barcola, they have signed talented wingers Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godt and forward Ferran Torres to strengthen their squad. 

Luis Enrique’s side hasn’t started the league phase well two years in a row but they performed when it mattered and went on to lift the trophy for a second consecutive season. PSG has a very balanced team where everyone knows their role. PSG doesn’t also have one way to play – they can steamroll teams with goals but also defend stoically when needed. 

Their forwards Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué can pose a massive threat for any team in Europe while Vitinha controls the tempo of the game in midfield. Their fullbacks Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi are also additional threats in attack and their central defence with Marquinhos and Willian Pacho remains calm at the back. 

They have already won the competition now and most of their players have big match experience. We still do not see many European clubs getting the better of them and that’s why they go into this season’s UCL being the favourites yet again.
