UEFA Champions League 2026/27: Our top 5 contenders for the title

As another season of Europe’s top-most competition approaches, fans of all major clubs will be filled with excitement to see who claims the biggest continental prize on offer this time around.

Paris Saint-Germain have now won two back-to-back Champions League trophies and will again be looking to defend their crown. However, there are many European giants looking to get their hands on the prize.

Here, we present our pick of the top five contenders for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League title.

5. Barcelona 

The five-time winners haven’t lifted the Big Ears since 2015. Almost a decade later, winning their sixth Champions League title remains Barcelona’s foremost priority.

Barça have won back-to-back LaLiga titles and possess a host of talented young players from their famed youth academy, La Masia. The likes of Pau Cubarsí, Lamine Yamal, Joan García, and Gavi have returned to the squad as World Cup winners over the summer, while the addition of English winger Anthony Gordon and Spanish midfield maestro Rodri from the Premier League has strengthened them furthermore. The Blaugrana have also started the new season well, obliterating teams with their attack.

Arguably, their only weakness at the moment lies at centre-forward, where they couldn’t secure the signing of their prime target, Julián Alvarez, from Atlético Madrid. Instead, they had to settle for the injury-prone Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, which seems more like a panic buy than a well-thought-out signing.

Despite their lack of a quality striker, Barcelona will definitely go into this Champions League season as one of the favourites for the title.

4. Bayern Munich

Last season’s semi-finalist and six-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich are a strong outfit, to say the least. They last lifted the continental trophy in 2020 and will be eager to reach seventh heaven this time around.

The Bavarian giants gave PSG a run for their money in the semi-finals tie last season, over the course of which they firmly established themselves as a team with one of the most lethal front lines in all of Europe.

Bayern are the defending German Bundesliga champions and have been annihilating oppositions with their high energy, quick passing, and clinical finishing. Their front three of Luis Díaz, Harry Kane, and Michael Olise combined for a whopping 109 goals across all competitions last season, with Kane scoring 61 goals, Olise scoring 22, and Díaz 26. 

Bayern’s problems lie at the back, where most of their vulnerabilities lie. If they can fix their defensive issues, they would simply be unstoppable. Given their pedigree in the competition, and the fact that they are one of the best attacking teams in Europe, Bayern Munich will be one of the firm favourites for the Champions League title this season.

3. Real Madrid

Despite being the most successful club in Champions League history by a mile and a half, Real Madrid have been underwhelming in the competition over the past two seasons. The 15-time champions have struggled with form, dressing room issues, and frequent managerial turnover. Last season, they lost to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and ended the season trophyless.

However, Los Blancos have certainly strengthened their squad over the summer with some exciting signings, such as young winger Yan Diomande, fullbacks Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries, and centre-back Ibrahima Konaté. Although they missed out on World Cup-winning Spanish midfielder Rodri, who has joined Barça instead, Real Madrid undeniably look stronger this season.

José Mourinho, back at the Bernabéu after 13 years, is one of the most experienced and successful coaches in world football and knows how to navigate and win big tournaments. With Vinícius Júnior renewing his contract, and the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Diomande gearing up to get onto the pitch, the European giants have no dearth of talent and intent in their squad.

The Champions League has been the competition where they shine the most. When it comes to contenders for this trophy, count Real Madrid out at your own peril.

2. Arsenal

Last year’s finalists and reigning Premier League champions, Arsenal are one of the strongest teams in the competition this season as well. 

While the other top teams from the league like Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea are in transition, the Gunners have the most settled team, with their core of key players intact along with some good players like winger Christos Tzolis and midfielder Bruno Guimarães joining the squad over the summer. The likes of Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhães have already experienced big games in the Champions League and they will go into the new edition desperate to end the club’s quest for their first-ever piece of European silverware. 

Arsenal undoubtedly have the best defence in Europe, which they showed several times last season. Although they found it difficult to score in the Premier League, in the league phase of the Champions League they ran riot against most teams and topped the league table with eight wins out of eight. Their loss to PSG in the final was also a close one, as they lost on penalties. 

Last season, Arsenal struggled a bit with creating chances from open play and sometimes even finding the finishing touch. Their front line is decent, but as compared to the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid, Barça, and PSG, their attack does lack the cutting edge. That said, having done well to reach the semi-finals and final in the previous two years, Arsenal are surely going to go into the Champions League this time around knowing they can go all the way.

1. Paris Saint-Germain 

The now two-time Champions League winners are yet again heavy favourites for the title. Like Arsenal, PSG too have their core intact, having also added a mix of experienced and talented young players. Although they let go of winger Bradley Barcola, they have signed talented wingers Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godt, and forward Ferran Torres to strengthen their squad. 

Luis Enrique’s side hasn’t started the league phase well for two years in a row, but they perform when it matters the most. They have a very balanced squad, with every player knowing his role. PSG also do not have just one way to play; they can steamroll teams with goals but also defend stoically when needed. 

PSG forwards Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé, and Désiré Doué can pose a massive threat for any team in Europe, while Vitinha controls the tempo of the game in midfield at will. Their fullbacks, Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi, are also key threats in attack, while their centre-back pairing of Marquinhos and Willian Pacho exudes calmness at the back.

The Parisians have already won the competition twice now and most of their players have big-match-winning experience. We still do not see another team getting the better of them and have them as our top favourites to retain the title yet again.
