For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.
UEL 2025/26 | Final: Freiburg vs Aston Villa | 00:30 IST, May 21, 2026
Freiburg have had a very formidable season in the Europa League. With just two defeats in their entire campaign, they have gone about their business in a very efficient manner, befitting a team from the German top flight.
Although their domestic form was a little patchy towards the end, they managed to finish a respectable seventh in the league, which will be enough for a spot in the Conference League next season. But head coach Julian Schuster and his side will know that victory here will not only give them their first major trophy, but also a ticket to the prestige and riches of Champions League football.
Die Schwaben have been thoroughly dominant in their last few Europa League games, as shown by their systematic 3–1 demolition of Portuguese side Braga in the second leg of their semi-final tie, or the 6–1 aggregate thrashing they handed out to Celta Vigo in the quarter-finals.
Vincenzo Grifo has been Freiburg’s leading man with five goals and will be entrusted with the goalscoring responsibility again. Matthias Ginter, Chris Gunter, and Philipp Lienhart are all experienced in the heart of defence and will be entrusted to stop the Villa attack.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, are led by Unai Emery, who is the undisputed master of the Europa League. This is a golden opportunity for the Villans to end their quest for major silverware, having last won the League Cup way back in 1996.
While Villa have already secured Champions League status for next season via the Premier League, they will be desperately eager to end their recent status as the nearly men, having come close to winning a trophy two seasons running but falling short at the final stage both times.
Like Freiburg, Villa have also had a pretty strong season, having lost just twice in the Europa League. They comfortably dispatched fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the semis with a 4–1 aggregate scoreline after losing the first leg. Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Youri Tielemans will all be the key players for Villa in attack, while the likes of Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, and Emi Martínez will look to be strong at the back.
It would be fitting if Unai Emery were to add a trophy to his name with the Midlands side, because he has achieved pretty much everything else with them.
There’s little to separate the two sides in terms of form. Both boast high-quality attacks and formidable defences, which will make the midfield battle a very crucial component of the match. Whichever side bosses the middle of the park could very well end up being Europa League champions.
All things considered, though, we believe that Aston Villa have a higher chance of going all the way.
