Freiburg will have a chance to win their first major trophy in club history, while Aston Villa will look to end their 30-year trophy drought as both sides are set to do battle against each other in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League Final at Istanbul.

For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.

UEL 2025/26 | Final: Freiburg vs Aston Villa | 00:30 IST, May 21, 2026

Freiburg have had a very formidable campaign this season in the Europa League. With just 2 defeats in their entire campaign, they have gone about their business in a very efficient manner that befits a team from the Bundesliga.

Although their league form was a little patchy towards the end, they managed to finish at a respectable 7th place, which will be enough for a spot in the Conference League next season. But manager Julian Schuster and his side both know that victory here will not only give them their first major trophy in club history, but also a ticket to the prestige and the riches of Europe’s top table in the form of Champions League Football.

Freiburg have been thoroughly dominant in their last few Europa League games, as shown by their systematic demolition of Portuguese side SC Braga in the second leg of the semifinals with a 3-1 win, or the thrashing that they handed out to Celta Vigo in the Quarterfinals with a 6-1 aggregate. Vincenzo Grifo has been the leading man for them with 5 goals, and will be entrusted with the goalscoring responsibility for his side. Matthias Ginter, Chris Gunter and Phillip Leinhart are all experienced in the heart of defense and will be entrusted to stop the Aston Villa attack.

For Aston Villa, led by Unai Emery, who is the undisputed master of the Europa League, this is an opportunity to end the club’s drought of major silverware, having last won the League Cup way back in 1996. While the Villans have already secured Champions League status for next season, they will be desperately eager to end their recent status as nearly men, having come close to winning a trophy two seasons running but falling short at the final stages.

Like Freiburg, Villa have also had a pretty strong season themselves, having lost twice in the entire tournament and comfortably dispatching fellow Premier League opponents Nottingham Forest in the semis with a 4-0 aggregate scoreline.

Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Youri Tielemans will all be the chief players for Villa in the attack, while the likes of Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, and Emiliano Martinez will look to be strong at the back. It would be fitting that Unai Emery adds a trophy to his name with the Midlands side because he has done everything else with this side bar winning a trophy.

Both sides have nothing to separate them in terms of the form meter. Both sides boat high-quality attacks and formidable defenses, which will make the battle of the midfield a very crucial component of the match. Whichever team bosses the midfield could very well end up being Europa League champions.

With all things considered, we believe that Aston Villa have a superior chance and therefore will start as favourites entering the contest.
