The curtain-raiser for the 2026/27 European season proper will see last season’s UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain take on the UEFA Europa League winners, Aston Villa, for the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, with Unai Emery once again coming face-to-face with his former employers in what promises to be a tasty clash between the two sides.

For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.

UEFA Super Cup 2026 | Paris Saint-Germain vs Aston Villa | 00:30 IST, 13 August 2026

PSG have now won back-to-back Champions League titles and have bona fide claims of currently being the best club side in the world. Under Luis Enrique, they have ascended to the top of the pile and, by the looks of it, have no intentions of relinquishing that mantle anytime soon.

PSG have played two pre-season games so far: against Mallorca and Manchester United. In both games, Enrique gave playing time to multiple academy graduates before bringing on the big guns in the second half. A 3–0 loss to Mallorca was followed by a 1–1 draw against Man United, which culminated in a good boost for Les Rouge-et-Bleu in terms of getting minutes as well as match-sharpness.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, have been a rather busy team in terms of building match fitness, having already played six pre-season games since the start of July. Their latest game, against Bayern Munich, was a good one in terms of squaring up to elite opponents and puts them in good stead to face PSG.

Villa have had a few ins and outs in terms of player transfers, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne moving to Chelsea, Man United, and PSG, respectively, while Amadou Onana is out with an ACL tear he suffered during the World Cup.

However, they have made a few signings as well. Johan Manzambi comes in after a highly impressive World Cup campaign with Switzerland, João Gomes has joined from Wolves, while Alejandro Garnacho has been brought on loan from Chelsea.

These two sides met in the quarter-finals of the 2024/25 Champions League, where Aston Villa gave the eventual champions an almighty scare across both legs, but it eventually ended in heroic failure for the Villans as the Parisians went through by the skin of their teeth, winning 5–4 on aggregate despite losing 3–2 at Villa Park.

However, Villa are a different team now, with Morgan Rogers and Marcus Rashford, two of their scorers in that game, not with them anymore. PSG themselves are a much different team since that game as well, with Lucas Digne and Maghnes Akliouche having joined them alongside the galaxy of stars they already have at their disposal.

Without a doubt, PSG are the far superior side on paper. They won the Super Cup last year, beating Premier League opposition (Tottenham Hotspur), and in general they have a great record against English sides, which makes them the overwhelming favourites to beat Aston Villa here. But, as we saw last time, expect Villa to make life difficult for the two-time European champions.

Score Prediction: PSG 4–2 Aston Villa
Venue: Red Bull Arena, Salzburg
