WPL 2025 Match 5 | Gujarat Giants vs Mumbai Indians | Preview and Predictions

Up next, the Gujarat Giants (GG) host the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 5 of the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

The Giants come into this game with confidence, having won their last game, while the MI will want to get their first points on the board.

Women’s Premier League 2025 Match 5 | Group Stage | Gujarat Giants vs Mumbai Indians I 19:30 IST, February 18

The GG bowlers had a game to forget in their opener against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru but looked much better against the UP Warriorz as spinner Priya Mishra troubled their top players. Despite 39 runs off 27 balls from captain Deepti Sharma, no one else contributed much as the Warriorz ended with a sub-par total of 143.

In response, the Giants were reeling at 2-2, but captain Ashleigh Gardner steadied the ship with another quickfire half-century. Harleen Deol and Deandra Dottin then finished the job in the 18th over to give the Giants their first win of the season.

The Mumbai Indians also had a losing start with a heartbreaking last-ball defeat against the Delhi Capitals. Nat Sciver-Brunt was the star with the bat for the MI, scoring 80 runs off 59 balls, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored a quickfire 42 off 22, though other batters didn’t contribute much as the MI finished the innings with a below-par 164, with Annabel Sutherland taking 3/34 for the Capitals.

In response, the DC came out firing as an out-of-favour Shafali Verma blasted 42 off 18 balls to make the other batters’ job easy. However, Delhi soon lost quick wickets, with Amelia Kerr and Hayley Matthews taking two wickets each. The Capitals were looking down the barrel at one point until Niki Prasad, fresh off guiding India to the U19 T20 World Cup title, came to the rescue with a steady 35 off 33 to take them close. Delhi snatched the win on the last ball by two wickets.

This game between Gujarat and Mumbai has all the ingredients to be a great tussle between two talented batting lineups and another high-scoring encounter. That said, the MI look far stronger and more balanced in comparison to the GG, who rely heavily on their batting.

Fantasy XI: Laura Wolvaardt, Amelia Kerr, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Ashleigh Gardner, Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Deandra Dottin, Pooja Vastrakar, Saika Ishaque, Shabnim Ismail

Venue: Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara
Winners Prediction: Mumbai Indians
