WPL 2026 | Match 19: Gujarat Giants vs Mumbai Indians | Preview and Predictions

The Gujarat Giants will meet a resurgent Mumbai Indians side in a crucial game for both teams.

Both GG and MI are vying for a place in the knockouts, with the business end of the tournament set to bring some high-octane action our way. This match will be played on January 30 at the Vadodara International Stadium in Kotambi, Gujarat. 

Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.

The Giants have turned around their form with two consecutive wins after three straight losses. Their last match was against the Delhi Capitals, where yet again Sophie Devine denied the Capitals a win with heroic last-over bowling.

The Giants’ top order hasn’t been consistent, but their lower order has contributed crucial runs. Against DC, it was a late cameo from Tanuja Kanwar (21* off 11) that swung the momentum GG’s way after Shree Charani ran through the Giants’ middle order with a fifer.

The Giants have been over-dependent on the opening pair of Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine for decent starts; when they’ve failed with the bat, GG have struggled to reach competitive totals or chase big targets. One promising talent in the Giants line-up is Indian batter Anushka Sharma, who has looked superb every time she has come on to bat and has already played some crucial innings this season.

Giants captain Ashleigh Gardner has been underwhelming with the ball, having conceded far too many runs for her liking. However, veteran Rajeshwari Gaikwad has been the surprise package this time around, grabbing vital breakthroughs while remaining economical.

Their opponents for this game, the Mumbai Indians, produced an emphatic performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their last game. It was imperative for MI to win that game to keep their knockout hopes alive after three straight defeats.

Nat Sciver-Brunt became the WPL’s first-ever centurion (100* off 57) against RCB. However, MI couldn’t improve their net run rate despite putting RCB in a spot of bother, with Richa Ghosh (90 off 50) obliterating the MI bowlers late on. She could even have led RCB to a famous win if she had had any support from other batters.

Haley Matthews is slowly finding her form at the top of the MI batting order, having produced an all-round performance against RCB, scoring a half-century and taking three wickets to cap off a superb performance. That said, MI will have to watch out for complacency, as their batting has also been over-reliant on Harmanpreet Kaur and Sciver-Brunt this term.

With the ball, Amelia Kerr has been excellent throughout this campaign for the reigning champions, though her failures with the bat remain a matter of concern.

In the reverse fixture earlier this season, batting first, the Gujarat Giants scored a massive total of 192/5 for the Mumbai Indians to chase but couldn’t defend it, as MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur (71* off 43), with support from Amanjot Kaur (40 off 26) and Nicola Carey (38 off 23), chased the total down comfortably with a masterful batting display.

Coming to this fixture, given both teams have now played a lot of games on this pitch, familiarity with the conditions will stop being a major factor.

That said, MI still hold the edge for us, given they have a more balanced team on paper and their key players have all regained form going into the business end of the tournament. The Mumbai Indians also have a better bowling attack as compared to that of the Gujarat Giants.
