WPL 2026 | Match 6: MI vs GG | Preview and Prediction

It’s set to be another power-packed day of Women’s Premier League action, with table-toppers Gujarat Giants looking to make it three victories when they face the Mumbai Indians in Match 6.

MI showed signs of their all-conquering qualities last time out, however, and will be backing themselves to halt GG’s momentum.

For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.

Women’s Premier League 2026 | Match 6: Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Giants | 19:30, 13 January 2026

For the Mumbai Indians, the tournament began with a last-ball heartbreak against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, though they did give a rather good account of themselves in that contest and pulled themselves back from tricky situations at different stages of the game with both bat and ball. They’d probably think they should have won the game if not for some shoddy fielding that saw them give the eventual match-winner Nadine de Klerk two lifelines in the space of four deliveries, but it also wouldn’t be MI without their custom of losing the opening game of their campaign.

The defending champions then roared back with style and class in their second game against the Delhi Capitals, winning it rather convincingly with almost everyone chipping in with contributions. Nat Sciver-Brunt, who was poor with both bat and ball in the first game, showed an array of strokes during her 70-run knock, while also chipping in with two crucial wickets. Even skipper Harmanpreet Kaur joined in the action with a typically power-packed 74, while the bowlers chipped in with valuable contributions to win by 50 runs.

While the big names continue to perform, the performance of all-rounder Nicola Carey would have come as a welcome boost to the champions. In the absence of Hayley Matthews, the veteran Australian has taken her opportunity with elan, providing vital contributions with both bat and ball in both games. She can be expected to keep her place in the starting XI, especially if her impactful performances continue.

A small cause for concern for MI will be with Amelia Kerr’s form with the bat. The Kiwi all-rounder has been great with the ball but has failed to trouble the bowlers herself. The team will hope that she finds form and fluency as the tournament progresses.

Their opponents, the Gujarat Giants, have started the tournament looking like they mean business. With two wins in two, the Ash Gardner-led team look like a well-oiled, well-led, well-drilled outfit, with class, composure, and skill in equal measure. Against the UP Warriorz, GG put up a strong bowling performance as they emerged victors by a ten-run margin, with the likes of Renuka Singh Thakur and Georgia Wareham among the wickets.

Against the Delhi Capitals, GG showed their steely and determined side as they overcame the odds and won a nail-biter by just four runs courtesy of a magical day by new recruit Sophie Devine. The New Zealand international shone with both bat and ball, scoring a magnificent 95 before applying the winning touch with her exceptional bowling to defend seven runs off the final over.

Both sides are stacked with quality, and both teams enter this fixture on the back of encouraging victories that have put them in a good place. But if we had to choose a winner, we would be tilting towards the Gujarat Giants, who look settled, have the cushion of two consecutive victories, and also the hot hand of many established stars. However, we expect it to be nothing short of a thrilling match.

Fantasy XI: Sophie Devine (c), Amelia Kerr, Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Ashleigh Gardner, Nicola Carey, Beth Mooney (wk), Renuka Singh Thakur, Saika Ishaque, Shabnim Ismail

Venue: Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai
Winners Prediction: Gujarat Giants
