Scuderia Ferrari have announced that former Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu will be their Reserve Driver for the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship. The Chinese driver will hold the role alongside Antonio Giovinazzi, who has been a Reserve Driver for the Italian Formula One team for the past couple of seasons.
The announcement is music to the ears of the Chinese driver, who was left without a seat at the end of the 2024 season after Sauber changed their line-up for the 2025 season, removing Zhou and his teammate, Valtteri Bottas.
Zhou Guanyu is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, having spent time there between 2015 and 2018 before signing for Alfa Romeo in 2022. After three seasons with the team and 68 races, which saw the team re-branded to KICK Sauber, the 25-year-old’s contract was not renewed at the end of the 2024 season. During his time with Sauber, Zhou managed to score 16 points.
Zhou’s partner, Antonio Giovinazzi, will share the Reserve Driver duties with him while also racing in the World Endurance Championship in the 51 Ferrari 499P, with which he took home the 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours title.
Both Guanyu and Giovinazzi will support the main Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
