The 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro has been a sensational tournament. From the first kick, it has featured some of the most thrilling action on display. From sumptuous goals and gravity-defying saves to edge-of-the-seat results, the tournament has had it all in abundance.

And at the end of it all, two teams stand tall. It’s a repeat of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final as Spain and England face off again, this time for continental supremacy.

The two teams lock horns two years after Spain beat England in a hotly contested World Cup final down under. However, both sides have had rather contrasting journeys on the way to the final this time around.

Spain have comfortably looked the best team in this competition by a country mile, head and shoulders above the rest. Their road to the final resembles a freight train ravaging whatever comes in its way. Starting with a thumping 5–0 win over Iberian rivals Portugal, La Roja have not looked back, dismantling opponents piece by piece, with the highlight being their 6–2 evisceration of Belgium in the group stage.

However, they met their match in Germany in the semi-finals, who were matching them stride for stride. With the game going deep into extra time, it felt for a moment that the world champions would run out of ideas, calling out for a moment of brilliance from the best player in the world. And sure enough, up stepped Aitana Bonmatí with the winner that broke German hearts and catapulted her side to the final.

It was a big moment of personal elation for Bonmati, whose participation in the tournament had been on the line following hospitalisation due to a bout of viral meningitis just a few days before the opening game against Portugal. But her recovery and her vital contribution in the semis just goes to show her class, determination, and resilience — qualities Spain will most definitely need on Sunday.

For England, on the other hand, this is a chance to defend the crown they won in 2022, but their journey to the final this time around has been anything but straightforward. A host of retirements and withdrawals had already made their build-up to the competition a soap opera; a 2–1 defeat to France in the opening game further added a little more chaos and uproar.

However, the defending Euro champions rallied in rather stunning fashion, whipping the Netherlands 4–0 and walloping British rivals Wales 6–1 to qualify for the knockouts.

The Lionesses would wisely consider themselves lucky in back-to-back games. They were 2–0 down against Sweden in the quarter-finals and were fortunate to not have conceded more before a stirring comeback saw them emerge victorious after a long-drawn penalty shootout to make the semis, where they once again found themselves behind against Italy before managing a comeback in extra time.

While this approach is definitely not sustainable, at the end of the day, England are in the final, and that’s all that matters to Sarina Wiegman & Co.

England will once again bank on the talent and skill of Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang, who have emerged as this tournament’s Alessia Russo and Ella Toone for England. A lot will rest on these two if England are to have any hopes of retaining their crown.

While there is quality stacked on both sides, this contest does have a clear favourite. The quality, the skill, and the level of performances they have delivered throughout the tournament make Spain clear favourites going into the final.

England will look to retain their crown and avenge the World Cup loss. Spain will look to beat them again and do the double. And we believe they have enough ability and self-belief to do just that.
