FIFA WC26 | Final: ESP vs ARG | 00:30 IST, July 20, 2026
Teams’ Overview
Spain
Being the defending European champions, Spain entered the competition as one of the firm favourites for the title and that’s why it came as a surprise when they began their World Cup campaign in underwhelming fashion, playing a stalemate in their opener against a heroic Cape Verde. However, they recovered well to post wins against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to become table toppers, thereby securing a comfortable qualification through to the Round of 32.
Spain has faced a relatively tougher knockout draw, playing Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France enroute to the final. The Spaniards first thrashed Austria 3-0 in the RO32, then broke Portuguese hearts in the RO16 with a dramatic late win. In the quarter-finals, they came up against a tricky Belgium side but again found a late winner, displaying their resilience and fighting spirit.
The semi-final was their toughest test yet facing the favourites France for a place in the final. Not many former footballers, pundits and even fans expected Spain to win this but they completely dominated the encounter, exposed France’s weaknesses and booked their place in the final of the showpiece event after a hiatus of 16 years with an emphatic 2-0 win.
Spain’s strength in this campaign can be attributed to their defensive discipline as they have been stingy conceding goals. The Spanish backline has been near perfect, conceding only one goal in the entire tournament so far. Although their attack hasn’t really fired as expected, they have been able to get the job done. Their tactical brilliance and control in the midfield were the highlight of their win against France.
A lot of focus was on Lamine Yamal’s debut World Cup campaign but the young winger hasn’t really set the stage on fire. However, Mikel Merino has come clutch for Spain in the knockouts with two vital winners in the knockouts. The ever-reliable Mikel Oyarzabal has been their top-scorer with five goals so far but special mention for Rodri as he has returned to his very best after that unfortunate ACL injury. He has received support from Fabián Ruiz and Dani Olmo in the middle of the park. Pau Cubarsí and Marc Cucurella have been absolutely brilliant in defence with goalkeeper Unai Simón being almost impenetrable in front of goal.
Argentina
The defending champions began their group stage campaign with a resounding 3-0 win against a tricky Algerian side with Messi scoring his first World Cup hat-trick. They won the other two group games against Jordan and Austria to comfortably qualify for the Round of 32. However, their problems started in the knockouts.
Even though Argentina has come through a fairly easy knockout draw, they have struggled in every game after the group stages though they have shown great powers of recovery in each one of them, showcasing incredible mentality, self-belief and never-say-die spirit. Another advantage for them is the form of Lionel Messi who has been absolutely sublime.
Argentina played Cape Verde in a five-goal thriller in the RO32 which was decided in extra-time. La Albiceleste then played against Egypt where they made a miraculous recovery, coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in regular time. However, the match was rife with inconsistent refereeing decisions. In the quarter-final, they faced Switzerland and had a much-improved showing with a 3-1 win.
The semi-final encounter against England was probably the most challenging in terms of the quality of the opponent. The Three Lions took the lead and Argentina had to again recover from a one-goal deficit to win 2-1 and book their place in the final. This wasn’t so much about the Argentinian fightback, more to do with tactical failure from the England manager Thomas Tuchel who went overly defensive too early and handed the game on a platter to Messi and Co.
Coming to their standout players, Messi has not just been their best player but also been the player of the tournament so far with eight goals and four assists in seven games. He has single-handedly won them games and also impacted results by providing vital assists. Apart from him, Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez have scored some crucial goals as well. Although, one thing is for sure, Argentina is heavily dependent on Messi and also defensively vulnerable as they have conceded a goal in every single knockout game.
Tactical Breakdown
Spain head coach Luis De La Fuente has always prioritised the collective over the individual, and the entire team has seemed to buy into that diktat. La Roja have gone back to the juego de posicion that has defined their yesteryear’s era of dominance, but with an added dimension of using the vertical pace and superiority of their young and dynamic wingers.
However, in this World Cup, it has been their defensive strength that have made them such a daunting prospect to face against. They have the best defensive record in this World Cup, and that is down to how effectively they press their opponents and keep them down to low quality chances. In possession, they have had an added emphasis on progressive carries, with Rodri marshalling the midfield in sublime manner. It adds to how they have improved since 2022 in all aspects. They then tend to use the pace and directness of the likes of Lamine Yamal who adds that unpedictablity and injection of pace when needed.
Spain have been a perfect example of keeping the ball until it sucks the soul out of their opponents, with their masterclass against France a key example in how tactically daunting they can be.
Argentina have been a tactical marvel in the sense that the approach with which they start a game is absolutely turned on its head by the time the final whistle is blown. Coach Lionel Scaloni has gone with his tried and tested 4-4-2 with almost the same selection of players. However, in the semifinals, he made one change by giving Giuliano Simeone a start.
Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister provide the mobility and the running from midfield, while Messi is the free man, roaming in those half pockets of space and saving his energy for the big moments, which have been in practically every game in this World Cup. With the second half though, they ramp up the attacking intensity and press with such ferocity that makes life hell for their opposition.
Writers’ Predictions
Neha Johri
Spain has come through a tougher knockout draw in comparison to Argentina and yet have hardly conceded goals, fought for every ball, scored clutch goals and shown incredible resilience and spirit to reach the final. They have only gotten better as the tournament progressed. In contrast, Argentina has been scrappy and physical, conceded half-a-dozen goals in the knockouts and haven’t looked comfortable even though they have scraped late wins. They have an over-reliance on Messi for bailing them out of trouble time and again, whether it’s scoring or creation although they have shown unbelievable levels of self-belief and fighting spirit to come back from the dead every time.
Having said that, Spain will be the most difficult opponent yet as they are disciplined, tactically astute and have the pace on the wings to trouble the Argentine defence. Spain has a superior midfield which gives them an edge as well. With Rodri sitting in front of the defence and controlling tempo and possession, Spain can neutralize Messi’s impact by strangling Argentina, denying them possession and breathing space like they did with the highly talented French attack. With their superb passing, slick link-up play and quick turnovers, Spain can also dismantle the fragile Argentinian defence. However, having seen the South American giants come back from one-goal or two-goal leads in the knockouts, Spain can’t repeat blunders made by previous opponents and get too defensive if they secure an early lead in the game.
Considering how good the Spaniards are in terms of tactical awareness, technically gifted players and defensive solidity, Spain will go into this game with a slight edge and can win their second Jules Rimet trophy. The only worrying factor for them could be the inability to handle the pressure due to inexperience or the best player in the world deciding to take matters in his hands and making a telling impact.
As far as finals go, this could be another cagey affair with neither team taking unnecessary risks in the first half. If the match is goalless in the first 45 minutes, the second half could see more attacking intent from both sides with Spain winning narrowly.
Score Prediction: Spain 2–1 Argentina
Delwyn Serrao
This is an ultimate clash of attack vs defense. Argentina has an attack that can crank up the intensity at the flick of a switch and they have the bodies and the runners to make it count, not forgetting the mental strength and fortitude that also goes along with it. With one formidable test after another in this World Cup, the defending champions have time and again proved their mettle and risen up despite being beaten down in every single game. They also have the knowhow to play in the finals having been here at this very stage 4 years ago and won it all.
For Spain, while it is their first World Cup Final in 16 years, this is their second major final in a row, having played and won the 2024 Euro Final in Berlin 2 years ago. They also have the mentality and the fortitude to approach big games. These are two sides who are big on the collective rather than the individual and the match will pan out that way.
I believe that Spain will have enough in the tank to outlast another Argentina onslaught and ensure that they are world champions for the second time.
Score Predictions: Spain 2–1 Argentina (after extra time)
