Ange Postecoglou’s biggest chapter starts with expectation of no failure

Well, let me just get this out of the way: Ange Postecoglou being appointed as the head coach of reigning Saudi Pro League champions Al-Nassr was not on my bingo card for 2026.

But if football over the years has taught us one thing, it is to expect the unexpected.

Not many fathomed the possibility of his next job being in Riyadh after he was relieved of his duties at Nottingham Forest following what turned out to be an absolutely diabolical spell as head coach. However, he is now the 12th head coach of Al-Nassr this decade, and he faces a challenge that he never has throughout the course of his managerial career.

Being the latest manager in the seemingly never-ending carousel of managers at Al-Nassr, Postecoglou knows that failure is non-negotiable, let alone an option. You either win, or you perish. Ange has been rather vocal about the fact that he is a manager who wins in his second season (cue that iconic press conference at Spurs), but the nature of the beast that is Al-Nassr means that there won’t be a second season if they do not win in the first.

Last season was the first time since 2019 that Al-Nassr won the league. And it is a given that they do not want to stop at one. A quiet summer window is not going to be an excuse in the quest for another title. A challenge on two fronts is the bare minimum, with Al-Nassr set to play in the AFC Champions League this season. With the Saudi league title won, the sights will now be set on continental dominance, and that is where things get a bit tricky.

Postecoglou has had a rather poor record in the AFC Champions League, having flattered to deceive in the tournament during his stints with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama F. Marinos in his earlier years. The continental crown has also remained well away from the grasp of Al-Nassr despite the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, João Felix, and Sadio Mané.

Al-Nassr is a club that boasts many former players ready and willing to voice opinions as and when things go astray. It is why anything more than a three-game buffer is a crisis, and there is little patience for managers who want to implement playing styles. Winning is the be-all and end-all at this club, and it has been that way for a while.

And then there are the players. There is the small matter of Ange managing Cristiano Ronaldo, a player whose fame, standing, and influence on the game are something that go far and beyond the Australian’s sphere of influence. With the 41-year-old approaching 1,000 career goals, how Ange manages that subplot while keeping him fit and firing for the season will be a clear point of interest around the world.

Another failure for Postecoglou will surely be the death knell in his career as a manager. And while not every manager who has failed in Saudi Arabia has fallen by the wayside, a third successive stint without success — if one believes that his Europa League triumph with Spurs did not mask the shortcomings that surfaced in the Premier League — will definitely be a fall that will be too hard to overcome.
