For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
FIFA WC26 | QFs: ARG vs SUI| 06:30 IST, July 12, 2026
Argentina prevailed against Egypt, recovering from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in regulation time. However, the victory was marred by controversial refereeing that may have broken Egyptian hearts as they had a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out. Having said that, Argentina showed great powers of recovery in the last 10 minutes to attack and score three goals to advance while Egypt showed lack of experience in game management while being 2-0 up. They defended badly and gave the Argentine team a lot of time on the ball which is never a good decision against a team with experienced world cup winning players.
Lionel Messi was yet again at the heart of it all with a goal and an assist. Egypt had a 2-0 lead with Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko on the scoresheet but it was the lethal combination of Mohamed Salah and Haissem Hassan on the right wing that threatened the Argentine defence all through. However, La Albiceleste once again looked to their saviour to produce a bit of magic and he didn’t disappoint. Messi first set up Romero for the first goal and then equalised minutes later to break open the match. Enzo Fernandes then scored the winner in stoppage-time to invoke crazy celebrations from the Argentine bench and fans. Heart break for Egypt but they made a match of it and will head home with pride, having reached the Round of 16 for the first time.
As for their opponents, the Swiss have quietly gone through the motions, right from the group stage until the Round of 16. They were unbeaten and topped their Group Stage table. Colombia was the favourites for their RO16 fixture but Switzerland stuck to their guns. While both sides didn’t create many chances, Colombia had the better chances and should have scored. However, Switzerland were stoic in defence, especially goalkeeper George Kobel who made some fine saves. The match ended in a goalless draw and moved to the penalty shootout. With the shootout poised on a knife’s edge, Gregor Kobel came to Switzerland’s rescue with a fantastic save from Cucho Hernandez’s penalty. Ruben Vargas then slotted in the decisive penalty to take his side into the quarter-finals.
Injury-wise, Switzerland is unlucky to miss out on an in-form Manzambi, Michel Aebischer and Luca Jacquez, all doubtful for this fixture. Argentina don’t have any injury issues and may field an unchanged side from their previous knockout game.
Coming to this particular match-up, Argentina is definitely the better team but their form hasn’t been convincing. Although the comeback win against Egypt would have given them a lot of confidence, they are heavily reliant on Messi for creating or scoring chances and defensively vulnerable while Switzerland have been solid defensively, only conceding three goals in the competition so far. Switzerland has had some top performers in Ruben Vargas, Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye who can take advantage of the leaky Argentine defence. If Switzerland can keep Messi quiet, they have a great chance of getting past the reigning champions and causing a huge upset. Argentina on the other hand, needs to have other attacking players help when Messi is serenaded by the opposition defence and need to defend better on counters and turnovers. Against Egypt, they were too easily bypassed in the midfield and Switzerland would keep that in mind.
A difficult one to call but we feel Switzerland can cause an upset here as the defending champions haven’t looked convincing at all and the Swiss will go into this game with nothing to lose while Argentina will be under pressure. We believe this will be another tight and scrappy affair with the Swiss winning narrowly and causing a massive upset.
Score Prediction: Argentina 0-1 Switzerland
