Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 – DAY 9 Recap

Day 9 of the Commonwealth games brought medals galore for India. Two historic Judo golds from Harsh Singh and Asmita Dey, two silver medals courtesy of Neeraj Chopra and Yamini Mourya and two precious bronze medals from Tejaswin Shankar and Yash Vir Singh made it a great day for India at the CWG 2026. Ten Indian pugilists also made it to the finals in their weight category, assuring India of ten medals as well. 

Elsewhere, Australia smashed the CWG record in 4 x 100m medley relay in swimming. Australia dominated in the pool again with the women’s team breaking games record with a straight eighth gold medal in the women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay as well. 

Let’s take a look at India’s schedule and medals on Day 9 of the CWG 2026 –

CWG 2026 Athletics

Men’s Javelin Final – India demonstrated its massive growth in Javelin with a double podium finish with Neeraj Chopra bagging the silver (85.83m) with a season best throw and Yash Vir Singh (85.41m) grabbing the bronze with a personal best. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (89.75m) won the gold. 

Men’s Decathlon – India’s Tejaswin Shankar created history with India’s first medal in Decathlon – a bronze medal finish after the ten events. He ended the competition in third place with 7976 points. Victor Lindon of Grenada claimed gold with 8096 points. 

Men’s 400 m Hurdles final – India’s Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan finished the Men’s 400 m hurdles in a disappointing manner ending in seventh and eighth places. 

Mixed 4 x 400m relay Round 1 – Indian mixed relay team of Vishal TK, Ansa Babu, Rajesh Ramesh and Rashdeep Kaur finished fourth in Heat 2 of the mixed 4x400m relay first round. They advanced to the final by clocking 3:20.98.  

CWG 2026 Boxing

Women’s 51 kg semi-final – Indian boxer Sakshi Chaudhary reached the CWG final in the Women’s 51 kg category. She defeated Canada’s Amber-Jane Wall with a unanimous 5-0 decision. 

Women’s 54 kg semi-final – Preeti Pawar was also in action in boxing in the women’s 54 kg semifinals against Zambia’s Catherine Mwape by winning the contest 5-0. She now has a chance at the gold medal in the final. 

Women’s 57 kg semi-final – Jaismine Laboria took on Lesotho’s Rapelang Maselela in the women’s 57 kg boxing semifinals. She won the bout with the referee stopping the contest (RSC) due to her supremacy. Jaismine is another contender for Gold from the boxing contingent. 

Women’s 60 kg semi-final – Priya Ghanghas entered the final of the women’s 60 kg with a 4-1 victory over England’s Lucy Kings-Whitley. 

Women’s 70 kg semi-final – Indian boxer Arundhati Chaudhary too marked a successful outing, reaching the final of the women’s 70 kg against Wales’ Rosie Eccles, winning the contest 4-0 in a bloody affair that saw both boxers bleeding. 

Women’s 75 kg semi-final – Indian Olympian and former World Champion Lovlina Borgohain marked her semi-final outing with a win, ensuring another silver or gold for India. 

Men’s 55 kg semi-final – Jadumani Singh Mandengbam continued his exceptional form beating Namibia’s Philip Haoseb 5-0 (on points) to reach the final of the Men’s 55 kg category. 

Men’s 60 kg semi-final – Sachin Siwach competed in the Men’s 60 kg semi-final against Wales’ Owain Harris-Allan and won by a unanimous 5-0 decision. 

Men’s 80 kg semi-final – Ankush Panghal too made it to the final of the Men’s 80 kg category after dominating his Canadian opponent Joshua Ofori by a unanimous decision. 

Men’s 90 + kg semi-final – Narendar Berwal was another Indian boxer who made it to the final in his weight category with a 5-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago’s Nigel Paul. 

CWG 2026 Judo

Women’s 48 kg final – India’s Asmita Dey clinched a historic gold in the 48 kg category against Canada’s Heidi Quach in a tight contest. With neither judoka able to break the deadlock in regulation time, the contest moved into golden score, where Asmita produced the decisive move to grab India’s first judo gold at the CWG. 

Women’s 52 kg Repechage – Shraddha Chopade’s medal hopes came to an end after a 0-1 defeat to Lola Hodson of Wales in the Women’s 52 kg repechage round. 

Women’s 57 kg final – Yamini Mourya won the silver in Women’s 57 kg, bringing home another medal from Judo against England’s Acelya Toprak who took home the gold due to three shido penalties against the Indian proving decisive. 

Men’s 60 kg final – Harsh Singh grabbed India’s second gold medal in Judo with a hard-fought victory over Australia’s Joshua Katz. He won by a waza-ari sealing the contest and giving India another gold. 

Men’s 66 kg Repechage – India’s Rohit Majgul’s medal campaign came to an end after a 1-2 defeat to Michael Fryer of England in the 66 kg repechage round. 

CWG 2026 Track Cycling

Men’s 4000m Individual Pursuit – India finished poorly in the men’s 4000 metre individual pursuit qualifying as both Indians in the fray, Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Sekhon crashed out of contention.

Dinesh ended the race in 17th place with a timing of 4:29.267 seconds while Harshveer ended in 19th place out of 23 cyclists in the race. 

Men’s Elimination Race Final – The disappointing performances from India continued in track cycling with India’s Harshveer Singh Sekhon finishing a lowly 21st out of 23 cyclists in the Men’s Elimination Race final. 

Men’s Keirin First Round repechage – Indian trio of Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam, David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Jemsh Keithellakpam got another opportunity to qualify for the second round of men’s keirin event. 

Both Beckham and Ronaldo were knocked out of the competition as they finished second-last and last respectively in the first heat of the repechage. Jemsh raced in the fourth heat. He too finished the race in a lowly second-last position, bowing out in Round 1 itself. 

CWG 2026 Lawn Bowls

Men’s Pairs Sectional Play Section B, Round 4 – India’s won again in the men’s pair sectional bowls event as Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar clinch an easy 2-0 win over Falkland Islands. Only the country that finishes first in the four groups advance to the next stage, which means India’s next game against England will be a virtual eliminator. 

Women’s Singles Sectional Play, Section C, Round 4 – Nayanmoni Saikia took on Mildred Mkandawire of Zambia in her fourth match in women’s singles sectional play. Saikia won the tie 2-0 (17-2, 11-2).

Medals Tally

Australia continues to dominate the proceedings, especially in the swimming pool and have now amassed 55 gold medals and a massive 128 medals in total already with England in second place with 17 gold medals and Canada in third place with 17 Gold medals as well but England has more silver medals in comparison. India continues to be in 10th place with five golds and 23 medals in total so far.
