Every time England and Argentina have faced each other on the World Cup stage, it has been defined by an event so controversial that it sets the world ablaze.

This time around, both these nations meet for the sixth time in men’s World Cup history, but this is the biggest clash, given that they’ve never met in the semi-finals before. The stakes could not be higher, as England look to reach their first World Cup final in 60 years, while the defending champions seek to gain admittance to rarefied company by winning two consecutive World Cups.

However, head coach Thomas Tuchel was not happy with the performance and made his displeasure very clear after the game. But one thing that he and everyone else watching could not deny is that this England team are mentality monsters, which many English sides in the past were not. And it is evident in the way these players run themselves into the ground.

Djed Spence, Dan Burn, and John Stones, the three names that were met with a lot of outrage when the World Cup squad was announced, proved to be key contributors to the win, showcasing their strength in numbers. This very attribute will be the key component as they face arguably their toughest foe in this World Cup.

For Argentina, their World Cup defence has seen them overcome one challenging hurdle after another. First, Cabo Verde pushed them all the way to the end with their ferocious inability to bow down to Leo Messi and his will. After that, they were on the verge of elimination and embarrassment against Egypt, having gone 2–0 down and staring down the barrel with ten minutes to go, before once again coming back from the brink to emerge victorious.

If that was not enough, they were once again involved in another bruising battle that went all the way to extra time, this time against the Swiss, and once again they found themselves on the winning side. With Messi doing Messi things again, Argentina are another team who refuse to give in and know not when to quit, even when the odds are stacked against them.

However, such exertions take their toll, and you cannot help but wonder whether this kind of emotional-rollercoaster football is sustainable, and that is something that could potentially count against them in a game that is as high-stakes as this semi-final.
