Every time England and Argentina have faced on the World Cup stage, it has been defined by an event so controversial that it sets the world ablaze. The stakes could not have been higher as England look to make their first World Cup Final in 60 years, while the defending champions seek to take admittance in rarified company by winning two consecutive World cups.
Here is our Preview and Predictions for this all-important semifinal clash.
FIFA WC26 | SFs: ENG vs ARG | 00:30 IST, 16 July, 2026
England have made it to a second World cup semifinal in their last three World cup appearances, but goodness me they were made to sweat, and sweat hard for this one.
The Three Lions put in arguably what was their worst performance in this World Cup against Norway. They went down to a screamer from Andreas Schjelderup, and were very fortunate to not go 2 goals down after Alexander Sorloth inexplicably decided against passing it to talisman Erling Haaland in a 2v1 situation with the latter in acres of space, probably letting England off the hook and giving them a way back into the match.
And just like the previous game, it was Jude Bellingham who inevitably changed the course of the game, first stroking in an excellent equaliser by dribbling past 4 Norwegian defenders, and then went on to show killer instinct by pouncing on a rebound after Morgan Rogers’ long-range pile-driver was inexplicably fumbled by the Norway keeper.
However, head coach Thomas Tuchel was not happy with the performance and made his displeasure very clear post-game. But one thing that he and everyone else watching could not deny that this England side are mentality monsters, something that a lot of the English sides in the past did not have. And it is visible in the way these players run themselves to the ground.
Djed Spence, Dan Burn, John Stones. The three names that were met with a lot of outrage proved to be key contributors in the win, showcasing their strength in numbers. This very attribute will be the key component as they face arguably their toughest foe in this World Cup.
For Argentina, their World Cup defense has seen them overcome one challenging hurdle after another. First, Cabo Verde pushed them all the way to the end with their ferocious inability to bend down to Messi and his will. After overcoming that, they were on the verge of elimination and embarrassment, falling 2-0 down to Egypt and staring down the barrel with 10 minutes to go, before once again coming back from the brink to emerge victorious.
If that was not enough, they were once again involved in another bruising battle that went all the way to Extra-time, this time against the Swiss, and once again they found themselves on the winning side. While Messi has been doing Messi things, again, this is another side who refuses to give in and do not know when to quit even with the odds stacked against them.
However, such exertions take their toll, and you cannot help but wonder whether this type of emotional harakiri and rollercoaster type of football is sustainable for long, and that is something that will potentially go against them in a game that is as high-stakes as the semifinal of the World Cup.
1986. The Maradona “Hand of God” and the “Goal of the Century”. 1998. The David Beckham Red Card. 2002. The David Beckham redemption to take the English past the Albiceleste. 2026 will see Messi surprisingly face England for the very first time in his career. It could very well be the last time he faces them as well. What will 2026 serve us ?
It is way too close to call the favourites for this game. Two mentally resilient sides who have shown fortitude above and beyond their capacity. Two sides coming off gruelling extra-time epics and two high-quality sides as well. But we have to pick one, and we believe that England will be very slight favourites over the defending Champions and will beat them to make it to the World Cup Final.
Score Prediction: England 4–2 Argentina
