France vs Spain | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Semi-finals | Preview and Prediction

We are now down to the final four, and the first semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup pits Spain against the previous edition’s runners-up, France, to be played on July 15 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The other semi-final will be played between the defending champions Argentina and England, the other major title contenders.

For this game, here we present our preview and prediction.

Two European heavyweights and former World Cup winners will battle it out in this high-stakes semi-final encounter: while one side is an unstoppable force (France), the other is an immovable object (Spain).

Both France and Spain topped their respective groups and easily secured round of 32 qualification. However, Spain have had a tougher route to the semi-finals, having faced Austria, Portugal, and Belgium along the way. In contrast, France have had a relatively easier route, facing Sweden, Paraguay, and Morocco. While France have been aggressive and played front-foot football, Spain have been stoic in defence and won matches through resilience and fight.

Looking at the numbers, France have scored a whopping 16 goals in six games so far and have conceded only two, which shows their domination in both areas of the pitch. Kylian Mbappé has led their attack with a stellar campaign yet again, scoring eight goals so far. Apart from him, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise have been the standout players in attack, with Manu Koné marshalling the midfield with aplomb. William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano have been solid at the back. All in all, France remain massive favourites to win the World Cup after narrowly missing out last time.

As for Spain, there were massive expectations for Lamine Yamal to set the World Cup on fire in his debut campaign. However, it hasn’t really worked out for him yet. Rodri in the middle of the park has dictated the tempo of the game, while Mikel Oyarzabal has been the attacking threat up front with four goals for La Roja. In the absence of a proper striker, with Yamal yet to properly come to the party, Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has come to the rescue with two important winners in the knockouts — one against Portugal and the other against Belgium, with both goals arriving late in the game.

Spain’s defensive line has really impressed, having conceded just one goal in this campaign and scored 11. France have a mean defence as well, having conceded only two goals thus far. In the knockout stage, France have allowed a total of 18 shots and conceded a cumulative xG of 3.8, while Spain have conceded a total of 20 shots and a cumulative xG of 1.8.

On paper, France definitely have the most balanced team in both attack and defence, while Spain are relying more on their defence to win them games. Les Bleus will be the toughest challenge yet for the reigning Euro champions, as their attacking line, comprising the likes of Désiré Doué, Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise, is simply superb. Didier Deschamps’ decision to move Olise from the wings to the middle as a No. 10 has just taken France from being a superb team to an almost unbeatable one.

However, Paraguay did show that they can be limited with a deep low block and tactical fouling, although Spain don’t sit in a low block and have always relied on intricate and quick one-two passing to break opposition defences. How to stop this incredible French attack will make for some food for thought for Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

From an injury perspective, both teams are fortunate to have their entire squads at their disposal for this crucial tie.

Like most knockout games at this stage of the tournament, we expect this game to be similar in terms of not many chances being given to the opposition. Both teams are threatening in attack; hence, both defences will need to keep their guard up. Both teams will set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, maintaining defensive stability and relying on counter-attacks to score goals. France have more pacey players in their front line than Spain and could benefit from this setup in attack compared to their Iberian opponents.

The last time these two teams met was in the semi-finals of the previous UEFA Nations League edition, which Spain won 5–4 in a blockbuster affair. We don’t expect this game to be as chaotic and end-to-end, considering the stakes, but we do think France have too much individual quality and firepower to edge out Spain in a tight encounter.
