After a Max Verstappen masterclass in Baku, Formula One returns this weekend as the grid moves to Asia for the Singapore Grand Prix at the iconic Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Under the lights, we have possibly a new title contender in the mix, a wounded old veteran looking to answer back on track, and other narratives at play.
For the 2025 F1 Singapore Grand Prix, here are our preview and predictions.
McLaren have had both championships locked in for the longest period throughout the season, and while the Constructors’ title is all but in the bag, they may have a slight reason to worry about the Drivers’ trophy.
While Oscar Piastri might have considered his teammate Lando Norris as his only title contender, reigning world champion Max Verstappen has brought himself into contention for this year’s title with a string of strong results. After the summer break, Red Bull have won two out of the three races, with the Dutchman winning both of them. McLaren simply had no answer to his mastery in Monza and Baku.
With seven races to go, Verstappen is 69 points behind leader Piastri. He has put his hat in the ring for the title race, though it is still a long shot. Their post-summer-break upgrades have been working well, but Singapore is a track where Red Bull have not fared well. One win in last nine years isn’t a good record for the Austrian outfit, but if Verstappen can continue his current run of form, then maybe McLaren may need to put pause on their intra-team rivalry in order to stop the four-time world champion.
McLaren should bounce back hard in Singapore, as it’s a track that plays to their strengths, but don’t rule out Verstappen coming up with a surprise or two.
Pole position prediction: Oscar Piastri / Max Verstappen
Race winners prediction: McLaren / Red Bull
McLaren have been the team to beat this season. Max Verstappen has singlehandedly handed Red Bull multiple race wins this season. Mercedes have also picked up the odd win here and there.
Among the frontrunners, only Ferrari are yet to win a race in 2025. The Scuderia began the season as one of the contenders behind McLaren, yet they have struggled to convert that early-season promise into anything fruitful.
Despite the season reaching its business end, Ferrari are winless. And to add to their woes, their star signing Lewis Hamilton is yet to get on the podium this year. The veteran Brit has struggled to find consistency with the SF-25, and despite having small flashes of promise during the weekends in the last few races, the seven-time world champion is yet to open his account with his new team.
While Ferrari finished P8 and P9 in Baku, there is some hope for Hamilton and the Scuderia moving forward. Hamilton kicked off the Baku weekend with a P1 in FP3, and while it was a disappointing qualifying session, he did find some good race pace late on to make up important places.
Hamilton is known to bounce back after difficult situations. Right now, he is not only having a rough season on field but also going through personal turmoil, having recently revealed the passing of his dog, Roscoe. If there is any driver on the grid who can turn things around on the track amid hardships, it’s Hamilton. Count on him to deliver in Singapore.
Dark horse: Lewis Hamilton
While Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull have been fighting it out at the top of the table, one side has been taking massive steps up the Constructors’ table.
Racing Bulls have had a string of strong results since Belgium and picked up a crucial double points finish in Azerbaijan. Liam Lawson turned around a career-best P3 in qualifying to finish P5, while his teammate Isack Hadjar finished P10, ensuring both VCARB drivers left Baku with points.
A podium in Zandvoort for Hadjar and a P5 for Lawson in Baku in the span of three races shows the improvement Racing Bulls have made post the summer break — much like their sister team, Red Bull. They’ve moved up to sixth in the Constructors’ standings, having moved ahead of Aston Martin.
With momentum on their side and a challenger that is showcasing strong race pace, Racing Bulls have the chance to further move up the Constructors’ table. They should be in for another strong outing in Singapore.
