F1 British Grand Prix 2026 recap: Charles Leclerc picks up season's first win

Charles Leclerc won the 2026 F1 British Grand Prix to pick up his first win of the season. Late drama in the race saw pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli suffer a major mechanical issue and Max Verstappen retire after a crash, which saw George Russell finish second ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who made it a double podium finish for Ferrari.

The race had an anti-climactic finish; Ferrari’s decision to pit Hamilton during the Safety Car meant that he lost out on second place. Antonelli’s issues, meanwhile, forced him to take a massive hit in the championship standings, with Hamilton and Russell both making up good ground.

For Leclerc, this is his first win since the US Grand Prix two years ago, and now the Scuderia have picked up two wins in the last three races.

As the lights went off, it was pole-sitter Antonelli getting past both Ferrari cars heading into the first corner, with Charles Leclerc leading teammate Lewis Hamilton. The midfield saw some action on the opening lap itself, as Alex Albon was clipped and dropped right to the back of the grid and Oscar Piastri was hit and fell to P20 after taking front wing damage.

Piastri was in the pits on Lap 3 for a front wing change, while Red Bull saw an intra-team battle on track as Isack Hadjar chased down his more experienced teammate for fifth place, after Max Verstappen had picked him off a lap before.

Hamilton and Albon were hit with penalties; the Thai-Brit received a ten-second penalty for causing a collision with Ollie Bearman at the start, while the veteran Brit got a five-second one for a false start.

By Lap 10, the Ferrari and Mercedes duos made up the top four, with Leclerc almost three seconds clear of Hamilton and Antonelli within half a second of Hamilton. Antonelli went on the inside of Hamilton at Copse to snatch second place from him. Behind them, the two Red Bull drivers were in action as Verstappen tried to catch George Russell for fourth place, with Hadjar being chased by Lando Norris for sixth place.

Verstappen went around Russell on Lap 17 heading into Copse and kept him behind before heading into the pits. The Dutchman rejoined in seventh place and moved up to sixth instantly as his teammate came in to the pits the following lap.

The Virtual Safety Car came out momentarily on Lap 22 due to an umbrella flying onto the track. As soon as it was removed, the VSC ended and racing resumed, with Leclerc holding a 3.9-second lead over Antonelli.

Hamilton came in on Lap 23, with Russell following him into the pits. Russell just about managed to come out ahead of Hamilton, taking fifth spot, while Hamilton slotted in at sixth. Race leader Antonelli came in for his stop on Lap 25 and kept hold of the lead after a swift stop, while Leclerc rejoined in second place, comfortably coming out more than three seconds clear of Lando Norris, the reigning world champion having had a slow-ish stop that saw him pit from third place but come out in seventh.

Hamilton stormed around the outside at Copse to take fourth place, but Russell fought back on the Hangar Straight to retake the spot. The two continued to exchange places, and Hamilton once again got past Russell going around the outside at Brooklands before Russell retook his spot at Copse, going on the inside of Hamilton’s SF-26. Russell was informed of a puncture in his right rear tyre, but that didn’t seem to affect him as he tried to take third place from Verstappen, albeit in vain.

Mercedes eventually did call Russell in for a change of tyres on Lap 35, which allowed Hamilton to get much closer to Verstappen just as Russell came out with his new set of tyres in P7. Antonelli, who was yet to pit, came in for his stop on Lap 36 and rejoined in second place, ten seconds clear of Verstappen in third and seven-and-a-half seconds behind Leclerc. On fresher tyres, he took a second off the lead within the first lap after rejoining the track and was moving away from Verstappen.

Hamilton went around the outside of the Dutchman to take third place on Lap 38 before the VSC came out again when Nico Hülkenberg’s R26 stopped on the track, which saw Verstappen, Norris, and Hadjar dive in for their second pit stops. The VSC ended the following lap as his car was cleared off the track, with Leclerc resuming the racing in the lead with Antonelli five seconds behind him.

After looking like he was catching Leclerc at a rate of knots, Antonelli’s F1 W17 slowed down, which saw him come in for a stop to change his front wing and rejoin in fifth place, just behind his teammate. Norris stormed past Antonelli at Brooklands as the young Italian continued to struggle with his car. He was then asked to come in for another stop as the team looked to remove the left-side wheel shield, coming out in P10 with eight laps to go. With his issues persisting, Mercedes asked him to come in and retire his car, but Antonelli decided to carry on for a point.

The race saw its first Safety Car on Lap 48 as Verstappen beached himself in the gravel at Stowe. Ferrari called Hamilton in and left Leclerc out, which saw Russell take P2. The race ended behind the Safety Car, with Leclerc taking the win from Russell and Hamilton finishing third. Norris finished fourth ahead of Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto, and Pierre Gasly, who rounded out the points places in that order. Antonelli, who finished ninth, was handed a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits and dropped to sixteenth.

With Antonelli failing to take any points from Silverstone, Russell has cut his lead at the top to 25 points, while Hamilton is only seven points behind Russell.

For Racing Bulls and Alpine, this was a strong weekend, as both teams ended with double-points finishes, with VCARB walking away with a strong haul of 14 points.

Racing will take a two-week break before moving to Spa for the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix.
