F1 2025: Hungarian Grand Prix Preview and Predictions

After another race affected by rain at Belgium saw McLaren’s Oscar Piastri steal the win from pole sitter and his teammate, Lando Norris. The win more importantly sees Piastri increase his lead in the Drivers’ Championship and as the grid prepares for the final race before the summer break, everyone will be looking to go into the break on a high.

Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix 2025, here’s our preview and predictions.

A tight lower midfield scrap

While McLaren and Ferrari left Belgium with podiums and a good haul of points, the teams down the field also had a good outing at Spa-Francorchamps. Both the Haas’ picked up points in the Sprint race while Alex Albon helped Williams to some points with a P6 finish with Gabriel Bortoleto and Pierre Gasly handing their teams a couple of points as well.

The Constructors’ Championship has a tight fight going on in the lower midfield with the teams from P6 to P9 being separated by only 8 points. Aston Martin is just one point ahead of Haas, who are in P9 while Sauber has two points over Racing Bulls with the Swiss team sitting in P6. In a season where it looks like each and every point will count, expect the midfield teams to come hard to steal points from wherever available.

Silver lining for the Red

Knocked out in Sprint Qualifying 1, a P15 finish in the Sprint, knocked out of Qualifying in Q1 at P16, everything seemed to be going horribly wrong for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari saw Hamilton start from the pit lane as they gave him a high-downforce rear wing in hopes of being competitive in the rain and that’s exactly what the Scuderia got. Hamilton, even after his pit lane start, was flying at the start of the race, passing as he was getting past a host of drivers with ease as it looked like we were in for a quintessential back-of-the-field to front drive from the British veteran. In the opening 14 laps, he already made up a staggering 11 places as Hamilton looked one with his car finally.

Although he couldn’t get past the Williams of Alex Albon in the final stages of the race, Hamilton himself spoke about finding confidence post the race and a P7 finish after a pit lan start will do him a world of good. It looks like Hamilton is finally coming around to understanding his car better and it bodes well for the team and him as a confident Hamilton is something that the rest of the grid should worry about.

Dark Horse: Lewis Hamilton

One-man teams

Mercedes and Red Bull have a unique situation where they have one driver scoring the bulk points for them in the Championship standings. For Red Bull, Verstappen is used to it but George Russell has added responsibility this season with Mercedes fielding a rookie, Kimi Antonelli alongside him.

Russell has scored 157 out of Mercedes’ 220 points with the Silver Arrows sitting in third place in the Constructors’ Championship with Antonelli’s third place finish in Canada being his only points scoring finish in the last seven races. It’s not any better for Red Bull either, they first started the season with Liam Lawson and dropped him half way to bring in Yuki Tsunoda. Tsunoda has struggled as well as he has not scored a single point for the team in the last six races.

In a season where Red Bull have been struggling to keep up with McLaren, it has been Verstappen single-handedly keeping the team in the fight for a third place finish in the Constructors’ Championship. Both Mercedes and Red Bull will hope that their second drivers step up to give the team a good finish going into the midseason break.
