The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has announced a 24-race calendar for the 2023 Formula One World Championship season. The calendar was approved by the Members of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) following an e-vote.
The 24-race calendar will see a race in Las Vegas for the first time, while the race in Qatar is set to return after missing out in 2022 due to the FIFA Men’s World Cup. The FIA has also announced that the race in Las Vegas will be held on a Saturday instead of Sunday.
The 2023 season will start in Bahrain on March 5 before heading to Saudi Arabia, Australia and then to China for the first time since 2019. Following the second-ever Miami race, the European leg will kick-off in Italy before heading to Monaco. The Canadian Grand Prix will be in-between the European races in Spain and Austria before heading to the UK, Hungary and Belgium before the summer break.
Post the summer break, racing will resume in the Netherlands and then Italy before heading to Asia for the Singapore, Japan and Qatar races. The season will then return to North America for the United States Grand Prix, following which the races in Mexico and Brazil will be held. The first-ever race in Las Vegas will be held on November 18, following which the season finale will be held on November 26 in Abu Dhabi as part of a double-header. The FIA, though, hasn’t revealed any details about which events will be Sprint races.
Speaking about the new calendar, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President, FIA, stated:
“The presence of 24 races on the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is further evidence of the growth and appeal of the sport on a global scale. The addition of new venues and the retention of traditional events underlines the FIA’s sound stewardship of the sport. I am delighted that we will be able to take Formula 1’s new era of exciting racing, created by the FIA’s 2022 Regulations, to a broader fan base in 2023. In framing the 2023 F1 calendar, WMSC Members have also been mindful of the timing of the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.“
The calendar has also been scheduled in such a manner that it avoids a clash with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
