PL 2026/27: 5 talking points from Gameweek 6
Every Premier League weekend brings a lot of fast-paced action, edge-of-the-seat drama, controversy and chaos. The past weekend also brought a lot of those things as we saw some big match-ups, some easy fixtures, some disappointments and a few controversial calls from the referees.
Here’s our five talking points from the latest set of fixtures played in the Premier League –
Spurs earn a draw at Old Trafford but still awaiting their first win
Spurs performed superbly at Old Trafford, dominating the entire first half against Manchester United. However, they still couldn’t take their chances and United capitalised when they had one and took the lead. Spurs broke United hearts in stoppage-time as Dominik Solanke scored to earn a well-deserved point.
After all their efforts in the transfer window, the Lilywhites are still not able to produce the kind of results expected from them. They have looked good in attack but haven’t been able to create decisive action and clinical finishing in the final third. It feels like they lack an elite finisher in their team.
Although they have earned two back-to-back draws now, Spurs are yet to secure a win in the Premier League. The progress is definitely slow and with the kind of money they spent in the transfer window, we wonder how long before the Spurs’ management loses trust in Roberto de Zerbi.
Man City silenced a hostile Anfield but what next?
The weekend saw a blockbuster match-up between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield. The Cityzens played in a hostile stadium and were the second-best for a half where Liverpool dominated the game. With the dismissal of midfielder Ryan Gravenberch for two yellow card offences, the game opened up for them and they exploited the numerical advantage to bag a massive 3-0 win from a tough away game. There was also a bit of controversy regarding the poor refereeing standards in the game as the red card felt a bit harsh and really made the game one-sided.
More than the game and Man City’s performance though, the independent commission’s report on the 115 charges and the impending action still hang over the club’s head. Whatever may be happening on the pitch, off the field there is a lot of noise from football pundits, ex-football players and rival fan bases alike regarding the charges and speculation around what may happen.
It’s not an easy situation to be in and for the time being Man City players are keeping it out of their mind, winning games and are still unbeaten and top of the table but the pressure will only increase. Until the whole issue is resolved, there will be a dark cloud hanging over the club and the Premier League in general.
The Seagulls get the better of the Black Cats, how far can they go?
Brighton have surprised one and all with their incredible start to the Premier League season. They have performed brilliantly, having lost only one game so far and already beaten the defending Champions comprehensively and knocked out Manchester United from the Carabao Cup as well. Brighton have also scored the most goals in the league (18) so far, two more than table-toppers Man City and conceded the joint-least goals (5) along with Man City and Arsenal.
Their most recent game was away at the Stadium of Light where they won a fighting three points even after going a man down. Pascal Groß has been like a player reborn with three goals and four assists in six league games. Brighton is currently sitting in third place with 13 points after six games. The impressive part of this form is that the Seagulls have quite a few key players out with injury and yet they have done well without any complaints and played one of the most attacking football in the league.
The South Coast side is also playing in the UEFA Conference League which would mean having a tough schedule with almost three-game-a-week and therefore, it’s going to be challenging for Brighton with a relatively smaller squad to keep up the performances and stay in the title-race.
The Cottagers in trouble, is the job proving too big for Arbeloa?
Fulham have started the new season in dismal form, currently sitting in 20th place with two draws and four defeats. New head-coach Alvaro Arbeloa hasn’t been able to get the results expected from the Cottagers.
Their latest defeat away to Ipswich Town has really piled the pressure on Arbeloa as he looks to understand whether the issue is mental or tactical. It’s not like they are playing bad football, at times they have really shown a bit of quality but it hasn’t really clicked for them yet.
Fulham is without a single win in six Premier League games, even at home and it hasn’t been a set of challenging fixtures except for Chelsea and Manchester United. Although it’s early yet but if they don’t start picking up results starting with Hull City this weekend, there would be a lot of doubts creeping in the fans’ minds and also those higher-up in the management.
Coventry thrash the Magpies at home, is this the impetus they needed?
Promoted to the Premier League this season alongside Ipswich and Hull City, Coventry were the only ones looking out of sorts in the first few games.
However, the past three games, they have started to show why they did well in the Championship and deserved the automatic promotion. Coventry won their first home game against Newcastle United, thrashing the Magpies 4-1. Their previous game was another upset away to Nottingham Forest. For two games in a row, Coventry has shown fight and desire to compete and hope to their fans that they can survive top-flight.
It’s only been six games and considering three of their fixtures were against Arsenal, Man City and an in-form Brighton, they have recovered well to get back-to-back wins. This could prove to be the sort of impetus and confidence they needed to get the belief back.
With some of their key players coming back from injuries, the Sky Blues could go onto surprise a few people and maybe just maybe survive top-flight this season.
