The 2022 World Cup runners-up France will face a dangerous African Cup of Nations winners Senegal in their opening World Cup campaign on 17th June at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
Group I is a potential group of death with France, Senegal, Iraq and Norway. France has additional pressure on them as they have been touted as the firm favourites for the World Cup. However, they need to make a perfect start to first ensure getting past the Group stage. France possesses one of the most talented squads at this World Cup, especially their front line which could be a nightmare for any opponent.
As for Senegal, the African giants are coming into this tournament with the confidence of winning a continental title recently – the AFCON beating a strong Morocco side in the final in controversial fashion. Like France, Senegal too has a great combination of experience and youth and cannot be taken lightly as they can play some breathtaking football and defend their lead as well.
Coming to injuries, French forward Hugo Ekitike was unfortunately ruled out of the World Cup as he sustained a long-term injury while on club duty. Other notable concerns were regarding William Saliba who came into the tournament with back pain, Joules Koundé, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Théo Hernandez but all of them have now been declared fit. Senegal has concerns regarding captain Kalidou Koulibaly who is coming back from a serious thigh injury along with Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye who are coming into the tournament with fitness concerns.
Their recent form isn’t much different as France has one defeat and four wins while Senegal has two defeats and three wins in their recent fixtures. The two teams have only met once at the 2002 World Cup where France were the outright favourites but suffered a 1-0 upset.
For this fixture as well, Les Bleus are the favourites to win but the Lions of Teranga have a formidable attacking unit and this would be an exciting clash for the neutral. Difficult to call but we think France has a slight edge and may gain the vital three points with a narrow win.
Score Prediction: France 2-1 Senegal
