The 2022 World Cup runners-up will face the dangerous African giants Senegal in their World Cup 2026 campaign opener on June 17 at New York New Jersey Stadium.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
Group I is a potential group of death with France, Senegal, Iraq, and Norway. France have added pressure on them as they are considered firm favourites for the title once again. However, they need to have the perfect start to get past the group stage. Les Bleus possess one of the most talented squads, with a front line that can prove to be a nightmare for any opposition.
As for Senegal, they are coming into this tournament firmly believing they are the rightful champions of AFCON from earlier this year. Like France, Senegal too have a great combination of experience and youth in their squad and cannot be taken lightly, as they are more than capable of playing some breathtaking football.
Coming to injuries, French forward Hugo Ekitike was unfortunately ruled out of the World Cup after sustaining a long-term injury with Liverpool. William Saliba is coming into the tournament with back pain, while Jules Koundé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Théo Hernandez were concerns but have been declared fit. Senegal have concerns regarding captain Kalidou Koulibaly, who is coming back from a serious thigh injury, with Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye also coming into the tournament with fitness concerns.
Form-wise, there isn’t much to separate the two sides. France have one defeat and four wins in their last five outings, while Senegal have two defeats and three wins in that time. The two teams have only met once, at the 2002 World Cup, where France were the outright favourites but suffered a 1–0 upset.
This time, France are again favourites for the win, but the Lions of Teranga boast a formidable attacking unit, making this an exciting clash for the neutral. Difficult to call, but we think France have a slight edge and may gain all three points with a narrow win.
Score Prediction: France 2–1 Senegal
Venue: New York New Jersey Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA
