About

For someone of Chinese and Cambodian descent, someone who admired a certain Serena Williams while growing up, it is rather poetic that Harmony Tan announced herself on the world stage after defeating none other than Williams 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) with a super tie-break in the 1st Round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championship. Tan is a French tennis player currently ranked 115th (as of 27 June 2022) in the world in women’s singles WTA rankings.

Tan turned pro almost a decade ago—in 2012 when she was just 14—but it wasn’t until 2017 that she made her debut in the Grand Slam women’s doubles main draw. However, she and her partner Audrey Albié lost in the first round to another unseeded pairing.

Harmony made her WTA Tour and Grand Slam main-draw singles debut at the 2018 US Open as a wildcard entry before losing out in the first round to Eugenie Bouchard 3-6, 1-6.

Apart from her recent resurgence and rise in the WTA Tour, Tan was successful in the ITF Women’s Circuit where she won eight singles titles and one doubles title. Moreover, looking at her past records, hard surfaces and clay are where she has enjoyed playing the most, while grass hasn’t been the best of surfaces for her. Thus, her win against Serena becomes all the more impressive.

Apart from spreading its wings on some of the most lucratives and engaging sports around the world, Emirates’ tennis portfolio includes some of the most high-profile events in the ATP and the WTA Tours as well as the major Grand Slam events. Following her recent win against her idol Serena Williams in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Harmony Tan became the latest player to be sponsored by Emirates.
