This game will be viewed by over a billion people with varying degrees of expectations.
In Match 47 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, South Africa will take on a power-packed West Indies side in what has all the makings of a six-hitting showdown in Ahmedabad.
Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.
South Africa are currently resembling a runaway freight train, given the way they’ve been dispatching their opponents with ridiculous ease. Their biggest statement was made by the manner in which they trounced the co-hosts as well as the defending champions last time out.
Despite finding themselves in early trouble at 20/3 after electing to bat first, the Proteas never seemed to lose their way against India. First, Dewald Brevis and David Miller steadied the ship. Then, they pressed on the accelerator. And once Miller was dismissed, Tristan Stubbs assumed the mantle of destroyer. His blistering knock towards the end propelled SA to an above-par total of 187.
With the ball, it felt as though they had trapped India in an inescapable prison. They exploited India’s Achilles’ heel — off-spin — with skipper Aiden Markram opening the bowling and dismissing Ishan Kishan with the fourth ball. That wicket set the tone for the events that followed, as each bowler pushed India further into a corner. The Men in Blue had no answers to whatever South Africa threw at them.
South Africa look like the most well-rounded and balanced side in the competition, having seemingly ticked all the boxes. The fact that Ahmedabad has become something of a home base for them this tournament has also worked to their advantage, as they are well acclimatised to the conditions on offer and have managed to stay a cut above the rest.
However, here South Africa are up against a West Indies side who also happen to be peaking at the right time in this competition. They started off with convincing wins over the likes of Italy, England, and Nepal. However, they truly came into their own against Zimbabwe in the Super Eights. Having been put in to bat first, the Windies gave the entire tournament a taste of how devastating and dangerous they can be.
Led by the marauding Shimron Hetmyer, who seems revitalised and re-energised in his new role at No. 3, Daren Sammy’s men bulldozed their way to a mammoth 254. Zimbabwe did not stand a chance, as the Windies spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie ran through their batting line-up, helping the two-time Men’s T20 World Cup champions secure a huge 107-run win.
While the West Indies also appear to have most bases covered, they will be looking to the opening pair of Brandon King and Shai Hope for a more solid and authoritative start. Both are hugely talented players, but neither has been able to provide early impetus for their side, as highlighted by their relatively modest Powerplay returns.
While fans of both South Africa and the West Indies will be watching the game, throngs of Indian supporters will also tune in aligned with the South African cause, given that India’s progress more or less depends on the Proteas emerging victorious against the Calypso Boys.
The head-to-head record between the two sides in the tournament is firmly skewed in South Africa’s favour. In the five games they have faced each other in Men’s T20 World Cups, the Proteas have won four times, with their most recent victory coming in the 2024 edition, when they secured a closely fought three-wicket win via the DLS method in a rain-interrupted match in Antigua.
This is a contest that is genuinely too close to call. The West Indies and South Africa were arguably two of the best teams entering the Super Eights based on form, and the manner of their victories at this stage has been dominant in all aspects.
That said, South Africa are our slight favourites for this contest, primarily because they have far more experience playing in Ahmedabad, though it promises to be a match decided by fine margins.
