Day 17 of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup had just one game take place: a dead rubber between co-hosts West Indies and Afghanistan.
Here’s how it went.

Both sides hadn’t lost a game heading into this match, but it was the Afghans who suffered their first defeat, losing by a mammoth 104 runs.
The home side batted first and put on a handsome score of 218, with Nicholas Pooran showing his class, scoring 98 off 53 balls. He was supported by opener Johnson Charles, who made 43 off 27, while captain Rovman Powell finished off the innings with a quick-fire 26.
Chasing a total that needed Afghanistan to score at nearly 11 runs an over was always going to be a tough ask. Matters got even more complicated after they lost their main man, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, in the very first over. Following the powerplay, the Afghans lost four wickets in the space of 20 runs, which put the nail in the coffin as far as this match was concerned. Obed McCoy picked up three wickets, but once again it’s hard to look past Akeal Hosein, who was brilliant with the new ball (2/21).
For the Super Eights, the West Indies are in a group with the US, England, and South Africa. Meanwhile, Afghanistan need to play India, Bangladesh, and Australia.
First innings: West Indies 218/5 in 20 overs
Second innings: Afghanistan 114/10 in 16.2 overs
