In Match 10 of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, in a trans-Tasman encounter, rivals Australia and New Zealand will fight each looking for second win in a bid to secure early qualification for the knockouts.
Here are our preview and predictions for the game.
The defending champions are arguably the strongest, most-balanced side in women’s cricket at the moment. However, New Zealand must not be taken lightly, especially on the back of their last performance in which they produced an exceptional performance to beat a strong Indian side.
Australia beat a hapless Sri Lanka in their opener, reducing them to a paltry score of 94/7 in the first innings, with Megan Schutt being the pick of the Aussie bowlers with a figure of 3/12. In response, Australia eased to a win in 14.2 overs, with opener Beth Mooney scoring an unbeaten 43 runs.
New Zealand, on the other hand, faced a strong-on-paper India in their opener. Deciding to bat first, the White Ferns managed an above-par score of 160/4 and then bowled beautifully to beat the Women in Blue by a big margin of 58 runs. India’s bowling was particularly poor in the second half of the first innings, though credit ought to go to Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine to take their side to a big total.
Though Australia have a clear edge over New Zealand as far as their head-to-head record in T20Is is concerned, the Kiwi batting is on song, so it won’t be an easy game for the Aussies by any stretch of the imagination, but they should still manage to take the bragging rights come the end of this game.
Beth Mooney, Alyssa Healy, Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry, Amelia Kerr, Ashley Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Megan Schutt, Alana King, Lea Tahuhu
