Here, we present our SWOT analysis for the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Since Shikhar Dhawan’s departure in 2022, the Delhi Capitals have struggled for stability at the top of their batting order. The acquisition of KL Rahul in that regard was a huge upgrade last season. Although the rest of their batters struggled for consistency throughout the campaign, Rahul ended the season with 539 runs, with Abishek Porel (301) and Tristan Stubbs (300) being the only other batters to cross the 300-run mark for DC last year.
Moreover, the 33-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been a consistent run-machine since 2018. Barring his second season with the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023, where injuries limited his game time, Rahul has crossed the 500-run mark in every other season, including four instances in which he scored 600 or more runs.
Elsewhere, DC have addressed their middle-order and finishing situation with the addition of David Miller at base price. The lack of output from their middle-order batters and the inability to finish innings strongly were two of the reasons why their campaign fizzled out last season. Thus, the addition of an experienced campaigner in Miller solves both these issues while adding depth, with Ashutosh Sharma coming in at No. 7, followed by Vipraj Nigam.
Besides adding firepower to their middle order, DC also have one of the best spin-bowling contingents in the competition. The trio of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Vipraj Nigam can stifle any batting line-up when on song; the variations and flexibility these three provide are also invaluable. While defending runs in a small ground like the Arun Jaitley Stadium is challenging, all three are genuine wicket-takers and will be crucial to DC challenging for the play-offs.
For all the good work KL Rahul has done while opening the batting for DC, the team still do not have a fixed top three on paper. They have Abishek Porel, who hasn’t been able to upgrade himself from a 300-runs-a-season player to someone who regularly hits 400–450 runs, while they’ve brought in replacements like Prithvi Shaw and experienced international openers Ben Duckett and Pathum Nissanka. Nitish Rana at No. 3 also didn’t have a great 2025 season.
Therefore, despite yet another smart auction by the DC management, it remains unclear as to who their best top three batters are.
Similar to last season, DC still have flexibility issues with their squad, allowing them only six bowling options without compromising the balance of the playing XI/XII. Besides, they also lack good Indian seamers, with both Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan getting found out in recent seasons.
Kumar played 12 games for DC last season, picking up 12 wickets at an economy of 10.33, while Natarajan played just the one game as recurring injuries limited his game time considerably. Although both bowlers have looked in decent form during this season’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, they’re both on the wrong side of 30, and given their history of injuries on top of that, DC will be playing a dangerous game of chicken.
While uncertainty and chaos go hand in hand, they also bring opportunities for those who dare to take challenges head-on. With two of the top three slots still up for grabs, there’s a chance for certain individuals to put their hands up and make those positions their own.
Despite average returns in his last two seasons with DC, the incumbent Abishek Porel should start the season as the team’s first-choice opener alongside KL Rahul. However, if things don’t work out for him, the management could go with Prithvi Shaw, who has got some runs in the SMAT, while both Duckett and Nissanka are in the reserves, though bringing one of them into the playing XI will mean leaving out Lungi Ngidi, which will further weaken their bowling attack.
That said, their find from last season, Vipraj Nigam, has been in excellent form in domestic cricket. The 21-year-old added crucial runs lower down the order, scoring 142 runs while picking up ten wickets in his debut campaign. Thus, with both Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav not looking in great nick, a good 2026 season may push Nigam into contention for a place in the Indian T20I side.
The Delhi Capitals’ biggest threat to their play-off aspirations is they themselves. They’ve assembled an excellent squad, but getting the best out of this squad and finding their best playing XI will be their biggest challenge. However, as history has taught us, DC’s restlessness and lack of clarity on player positions and roles have bitten them back quite a few times.
Moreover, their dependency on certain domestic players can derail their campaign if things don’t work out. Both Abishek Porel and Nitish Rana have a lot to prove, while, as highlighted earlier, their Indian fast-bowling contingent isn’t up to scratch either. INR 8.4-crore signing Auqib Nabi has to hit the ground running, with both Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan looking well past their prime in T20 cricket.
Despite possessing one of the best squads in the competition, there are certain areas of DC’s game that need refining. Ultimately, we expect another inconsistent season from the Capitals and see them narrowly missing out on the play-offs.
Probable XII: KL Rahul, Abhishek Porel, Nitish Rana, Tristan Stubbs, Axar Patel, David Miller, Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, Auqib Dar/T Natarajan (Impact Sub)
