A high-stakes clash beckons as the unbeaten and mighty Punjab Kings look to continue their rich winning streak against a punchy and aggressive Rajasthan Royals who are looking to bounce back with a victory of their own in what promises to be a fascinating Match Number 40 of the 2026 IPL season.

Can anyone or anything stop the Punjab Kings at the moment? The Shreyas Iyer-led side have been playing with a style and swagger that is taking the IPL by storm, and none of the teams so far have been able to figure out a way to limit them, let alone beat them.

Delhi Capitals thought they had them. It was a pretty genuine assumption, especially given the fact that they just went and scored 264 against a Punjab bowling attack that has been disciplined and metronomically accurate throughout the tournament. Well, Punjab just went and overhauled a record 265-run-chase with an over to spare.

Punjab this season look a team that is hell-bent on getting that IPL crown that eluded them last season by the barest of margins. The opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have been battering opposition bowling attacks to shreds. Cooper Connolly and skipper Iyer have been providing the muscle and steel in the middle-order, playing the role of sheet anchor or destroyer based on the situation that they find themselves in. And then the bowling has been operating with peak efficiency. Arshdeep Singh has found his range after a couple of early lean games. Xavier Bartlett and Marco Jansen have also been consistent, while Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal provide able backup, with T20 veteran Marcus Stoinis there to stabilise proceedings when needed.

The fielding issues will definitely be one point of contention that needs to be addressed by the Kings. But apart from that, they look in ominous touch.

The Kings are a well-oiled machine, led brilliantly by Shreyas Iyer, and coached even better by Ricky Ponting. They know exactly what they are doing on the field, play according to the situation, and never let the situation get the better of them. It is why they are the only team in IPL history to go unbeaten in the first 7 games of the season. Much-deserved table-toppers halfway through the tournament and they are itching to seal that top-2 spot as quickly as possible.

Rajasthan Royals, in the meantime, are licking their wounds after suffering defeat despite scoring a mammoth 228 runs and seeing it get chased by the Sunrisers Hyderabad with 7 balls to spare. The Royals have been scoring runs and have been scoring them at a very ferocious clip, led by the prodigious GVaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, the top-heavy nature of their batting line-up presents them with a problem very similar to the one Gujarat Titans are suffering from.

It remains to be seen whether Sooryavanshi will be able to play a part in this contest given that he walked off the field with what was suspected to be a hamstring issue for the teenager. 

The bowlers and the rest of the batters apart from the top-3 will have to start pulling their weight for the Royals. Riyan Parag will have to have better game awareness and rotate his bowlers that much better or else it might be another long evening’s work for them.

Both sides boast tremendous batting power and can match each other stride for stride, but it is very difficult to put this past the Punjab  Kings, who have the better bowling attack too, despite the tap they took in the last game against DC. Punjab start as favourites and are expected to win this game.
