Match 50 of the 2026 Indian Premier League season brings us a “David vs Goliath” matchup of sorts as a dismal Lucknow Super Giants side hosts a high-flying and consistent Royal Challengers Bengaluru side at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
It has been a disastrous campaign for the Lucknow Super Giants so far. Two wins in their first three games ushered hopes of turning over a new leaf, however, losing six on the trot has now rooted them to the foot of the points table – with their playoff aspirations all but gone. Batting has been their Achilles Heel this season, however, despite posting 228 on the board, a rare off day from their bowling department compounded further misery as the Mumbai Indians secured a famous victory at Wankhede.
LSG’s batting unit found its form in the last game. Mitchell Marsh who has been consistent this year with 256 runs this season – hasn’t been able to convert his decent starts to big individual scores – and the team needs him to soon start converting these starts. Nicholas Pooran’s return to form with a knock of 63 at a strike rate of 300 is a welcome relief for the team. Promoted up to #3, the south paw looked very close to his previous best and with still five games remaining, Pooran firing on all cylinders can make all the difference.
That said, LSG are still looking for answers in the middle-to-lower-middle-order department. They’ve taken a huge call by dropping both Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad from the playing XI, however, their replacements in Himmat Singh and Akshat Raghuwanshi have struggled especially in the death overs – partly due to a lack of experience and partly due to a lack of support from the top order. Thus, whether they will continue to trust the youngsters or bring back their experienced campaigners remains to be seen.
Their impressive bowling attack failed miserably in the last game against the Mumbai Indians. However, given they play three of their last five games at home while the other two are at Chepauk and Jaipur – surfaces that offer something to the seamers – their bowling department should take care of itself and treat this MI performance as just an anomaly.
As for their opponents – Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Rajat Patidar’s men head into this clash against the Lucknow Super Giants on the back of strong performances this season. However, the team had a rare poor outing in their last game against the Gujarat Titans, losing by 4 wickets. Their strong batting lineup failed in the last game, however, they can take heart from the fact that their bowlers kept chipping away despite defending a modest total.
RCB’s batting has been their biggest strength this season. Virat Kohli has once again been the pillar of this batting unit – already amassing 379 runs at an average above 54. While the reinvented and more aggressive Devdutt Padikkal has ensured that they keep scoring at a decent rate with 282 runs in 9 matches at a strike rate of 188 this season.
However, the brightest sparke in the RCB batting lineup this season has to be skipper Rajat Patidar. His 258 runs coming at an incredible strike rate of 200.8 during the middle overs has laid the foundation for the rest of the batters to post mammoth scores on a regular basis – with the likes of Tim David and Romario Shepherd doing the finisher’s job.
In the bowling department, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has rolled back the years with his quality bowling performances throughout this season – with his 3-fer against GT taking his season tally to 17 wickets – and top of the Purple Cap race. Besides, Josh Hazlewood is slowly getting back to his best while the likes of Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma have done exceedingly well through the middle overs.
In terms of weather forecast and pitch report, conditions are expected to be hot and humid in Lucknow – with the high humidity becoming a challenge for the bowlers. The wickets here at the Ekana Stadium have produced the low-scoring games this season. The track has been slow, where the batters have struggled with their timing. The large size of the ground also makes it difficult to play lofted shots. The average first innings score this season has been 155 runs, thus anything above 180 should put the team batting first in pole position.
Looking ahead to this fixture, the Lucknow Super Giants are all but out of contention for the playoffs. While their bowlers have done the bulk of the heavy lifting this season, their batters just haven’t turned up – except the last game – but that too not entirely. RCB on the other hand have been in form with both bat and ball. Based on current form and previous head-to-head record, we’re backing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to return to winning ways.
