Match 50 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season brings us a David-versus-Goliath match-up, as a dismal Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) side hosts the high-flying and consistent Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.
Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 50: Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 19:30 IST, 7 May 2026
It has been a disastrous campaign for the Super Giants so far. Two wins in their first three games ushered hopes of turning over a new leaf, before losing six on the trot left them rooted to the foot of the points table, their play-off aspirations all but gone.
Batting has been LSG’s Achilles heel this season. Despite posting 228 on the board last time out, a rare off-day from their bowling department compounded their misery as the Mumbai Indians secured a famous victory at Wankhede.
LSG’s batting unit found its form in the last game. Mitchell Marsh, who has been consistent this year with 256 runs, hasn’t been able to convert his decent starts into big scores, and the team need him to start doing so soon. Nicholas Pooran’s return to form with a knock of 63, striking at 300, is a welcome relief. Promoted to No. 3, the southpaw looked very close to his best, and with still five games remaining, Pooran firing on all cylinders could make all the difference.
That said, LSG are still looking for answers lower down the order. They’ve taken a huge call by dropping both Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad from the playing XI, though their replacements, Himmat Singh and Akshat Raghuwanshi, have also struggled, especially in the death overs, partly due to a lack of experience and partly due to a lack of support from the top-order batters. Whether they continue to trust the youngsters or bring back their experienced campaigners remains to be seen.
LSG’s impressive bowling attack failed miserably in the last game against MI. That said, given they play three of their last five games at home, while the other two are at Chepauk and Jaipur (surfaces that offer something to seamers), their bowling department should take care of itself and treat the MI performance as just an anomaly.
As for their opponents, Royal Challengers Bengaluru come into this game on the back of strong performances this season. However, Rajat Patidar’s men had a rare poor outing in their last game against the Gujarat Titans and lost by four wickets. Their strong batting line-up failed in the last game, though they’ll take heart from the fact that their bowlers kept chipping away despite defending a modest total.
RCB’s batting has been their biggest strength this season. Virat Kohli has once again been the pillar of this batting unit and has already amassed 379 runs at an average of over 54. The reinvented and more aggressive Devdutt Padikkal, meanwhile, has ensured that the team keep scoring at a decent rate, having managed 282 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 188 this season.
However, the brightest spark in the RCB batting line-up this season has to be skipper Rajat Patidar. His 258 runs, coming at an incredible strike rate of 200.8 during the middle overs, have laid the foundation for the rest of the batters to post mammoth scores on a regular basis, with the likes of Tim David and Romario Shepherd doing the finisher’s job after him.
In the RCB bowling department, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has rolled back the years with quality performances throughout this season. His three wickets against GT have taken his season tally to 17 wickets, top of the Purple Cap table. Besides, Josh Hazlewood is slowly getting back to his best, while the likes of Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma have done exceedingly well through the middle overs.
In terms of weather forecast and pitch report for this game, conditions are expected to be hot and humid in Lucknow, with the high humidity set to be a challenge for the bowlers.
The wickets here at the Ekana Stadium have produced low-scoring games this season. The track has been slow, where batters have struggled with their timing. The large size of the ground also makes it difficult to play lofted shots. The average first-innings score this season has been 155, so anything above 180 should put the team batting first in pole position for the win.
Looking ahead to this fixture, the Lucknow Super Giants are all but out of contention for the play-offs. While their bowlers have done the bulk of the heavy lifting this season, their batters just haven’t turned up, except in the last game, but even then not entirely. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on the other hand, have been in form with both bat and ball.
Based on current form and the two sides’ head-to-head record, we’re backing the Royal Challengers to return to winning ways.
