IPL 2026 Playoffs | Qualifier 1: RCB vs GT | Preview and Predictions

After 70 games of enthralling, non-stop, edge-of-the-seat classics that brought households and fans across the country to a standstill, we are now left with our final four teams in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2026 Playoffs will see the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), take on the Gujarat Titans (GT), champions from four years ago, in what promises to be a classic clash between two heavyweight sides.

For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.

The Royal Challengers have had relatively smooth sailing this tournament and cantered to a top-two finish on the back of some well-rounded team performances.

Virat Kohli and Phil Salt were the early pace-setters at the top of the RCB batting order, dominating the Powerplay more often than not. While Salt’s injury did slow things down a bit, the emergence of Devdutt Padikkal as a classy aggressor has been a defining point of RCB’s season. His runs from No. 3 have, more often than not, managed to put the team in situations from where they have been able to control the proceedings, with skipper Rajat Patidar coming up with pyrotechnics in the middle order.

If that was not enough, the finishing prowess of Tim David, Romario Shepherd, and Krunal Pandya has provided the defending champions with sufficient batting firepower to blow teams out of the water both while setting targets as well as chasing them.

RCB’s batting is well-supported by their bowling attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been rolling back the years, Josh Hazlewood has not lost a spring in his step since his return from injury, while Jacob Duffy and Rasikh Salam have been able back-up foils. The spinners have been equally effective, with Suyash Sharma and Pandya putting the clamps on in the middle stages of the game.

Overall, RCB have been a very well-drilled and well-coached unit, which shows in the way they have played this season. The Playoffs present a golden chance for them to defend the title and become only the third team to manage that in IPL history after the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings.

As far as their Qualifier 1 opponents are concerned, the Gujarat Titans started slowly with two defeats on the bounce before catching fire, as their much-vaunted top three began to find form and fluency with the bat. Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler have once again done the bulk of the scoring for GT, and that has more or less been enough for them for the majority of the season.

It is the bowling, however, that has risen to the occasion big time for the Titans as the season has progressed. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna have kept on delivering wickets, while the return to form of overseas bowlers in Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan has made the GT bowling attack that much more potent. Rabada has been clocking speeds above 150 kmph with regularity, while Khan has once again found his mojo that bewilders batters worldwide.

While the form of their middle-order batters remains a point of concern, Washington Sundar and Jason Holder have produced innings of note in recent games, and that could make a world of difference for GT’s fortunes in the Playoffs as they chase a second title in four years.

The head-to-head between the two sides is level pegging, with both sides having won 4 games each. The two times that these sides met this year also saw a split, with GT winning their game by 4 wickets while RCB registered their victory by 5 wickets.

Two formidable bowling attacks going to have a crack at each other at a Dharamsala surface that has had something for everyone is a tantalising prospect. We believe that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru will start the Qualifier as marginal favourites solely due to the well-rounded nature of their batting unit which also happens to be a pretty deep one in terms of personnel.
