In Match 68 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) will take one final shot at play-off qualification after imploding spectacularly in the second half of the season.
The Kings have lost six in a row coming into their final league-stage game, where they’ll take on a crestfallen and dejected Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) side looking to end their woeful campaign on a high note.
For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.
LSG are a team out of form and under incredible pressure, led by a captain who is definitely feeling the pressure himself as the runs and results have dried up.
Nothing has gone right for the Super Giants this season. If they were to look at any positives from this campaign, it would be their opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis finding form to give the team explosive starts in the last couple of games. For the most part, there has been little to look forward to in the LSG batting department, an explosive batting unit that comprises Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, and Rishabh Pant, most of whom have failed to find consistency. The lack of output from Pooran and Pant has arguably hurt LSG the most this season.
Their local Indian batters haven’t provided much output either; after a promising start to the season from Mukul Choudhary and Ayush Badoni, there has been virtually nothing. There is plenty of firepower and experience in the LSG top order, and the management and Pant will hope the international stars at least sign off for the season with a good show for the fans.
LSG’s bowling has been flat as well. Their pace unit, comprising Mohammed Shami, Prince Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Mayank Yadav, has failed to provide an edge. Prince Yadav remains the standout bowler for LSG and their highest wicket-taker, and while Mohsin Khan has shown glimpses of promise, inconsistency and injuries have plagued the left-arm seamer. LSG have one frontline spinner in Digvesh Rathi, who has neither been among the wickets nor been economical, though Pant has an additional option in the all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed.
On the other side, we have an equally woeful and out-of-form team in the Punjab Kings, who started the season with incredible form, winning six of their opening seven games, but have won nothing since then.
The PBKS batters, who started the campaign so well, have seen their form fall off massively, though it’s the team’s bowling and fielding that must be worrying captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting the most.
The Kings have conceded over 200 in their last four games, with Arshdeep Singh leaking runs and the team unable to find a partner for him at the top. They have tried Marco Jansen, Ben Dwarshuis, Lockie Ferguson, and Azmatullah Omarzai in the last couple of games to open the bowling alongside Singh, but to no avail.
Yuzvendra Chahal remains Iyer’s go-to man for wickets, but Chahal has also been expensive. The only positive sign for the Kings with the ball has been Harpreet Brar, who has chipped in with wickets and proved economical.
Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Cooper Connolly, and Iyer himself were carrying the team with their explosive batting during the first half of the season, but the top four have failed to get going in the second half, with Iyer struggling the most. Suryansh Shedge and Shashank Singh have provided some runs in the lower-middle order, but the Kings, in a must-win game, need their stacked top order to provide them with a solid platform.
The Lucknow ground has been one of the non-high-scoring venues this season and provides something for bowlers.
The Punjab Kings are in must-win territory and need two points to stay alive in the play-off race. The Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, have nothing to fight for but pride and will want to give something back to the home crowd.
With home advantage on their side, and looking to see out a season to forget on a high note, LSG have the edge for us in this clash, especially given how out of sorts PBKS look.
