IPL 2026: Punjab Kings SWOT Analysis

Led by Shreyas Iyer and guided by a determined coaching staff, PBKS appear to be a settled unit heading into IPL 2026. With last season’s strong finish still fresh, the franchise will be eager to go one step further and lift their maiden IPL title.

In this article, we take a look at the SWOT analysis of last season’s finalists Punjab Kings ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season.

Strength

The 2025 season proved to be one of the most fruitful seasons for the Punjab Kings franchise. The uncapped Indian opening duo of Priyash Arya and Prabsimran Singh set the IPL on fire with their breathtaking strokeplay with both batters sitting comfortably in the top-5 for best strike-rates among openers with 400 runs or more. Notably only Lucknow Super Giants’ Mitchell Marsh scored more runs as an opener than the Punjab duo.

Led by captain Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to bat at 3, the Punjab Kings’ batting line-up is full of Indian talent. Only one batter in their top-6 is an overseas player, which gives them the leverage to tweak with the team combination as per their need, without compromising quality in any of the departments.

Captain Shreyas Iyer also has a variety of all-round options at his disposal. It certainly helps lengthen the batting order, with quality finishers like Azmatullah Omarzai and Marco Jansen slotted in at 7 and 8. Additionally, either Marcus Stoinis or Cooper Connolly will come in at #6, giving them another bowling option, alongside Shashank Singh.

Moreover, they boast one of the best seam attacks in the competition with Arshdeep Singh leading the attack with international quality bowlers like Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson capable of bowling in any phase of play, depending upon the venue and opposition. Similar is the case with Marcus Stoinis, who can operate as per the team’s requirements.

Weakness

One of the biggest weaknesses (at least on paper) for PBKS heading into the 2026 season is the lack of international experienced Indian players. Captain Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal have hundreds of international matches played among them. However, they are the only ones with substantial experience at the top level.

The likes of Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh are central figures of the side but haven’t played any international cricket. This is the same issue with their bench option. Yash Thakur and Vyshak Vijaykumar have shown glimpses of quality, but as backups of Arshdeep Singh, they have no international caps as well.

Besides, Yuzvendra Chahal was a big buy for the Punjab Kings in the mega auction to bowl alongside Harpreet Brar in the middle overs. However, the leg-spinner didn’t have a great IPL 2025 and hasn’t played too much competitive cricket since then. Thus, without a quality frontline spinner to potentially replace him, the spin department looks weak and can become a concern if Chahal doesn’t fire this season.

Opportunity

The Punjab Kings made it to their second-ever IPL final last season with a young group of players under Shreyas Iyer. PBKS invested heavily – more so on Shreyas Iyer the skipper than Shreyas Iyer the batter – and he rewarded the franchise by replicating the brilliance of his previous Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders sides.

However, this time around, many of his players will just be in their second season after impressing everyone in 2025. Hence, there will be a lot of data from the last season, with teams coming harder for their explosive youngsters in this new season. Thus, another successful IPL season would further build Iyer’s stature as a leader after he was made India’s ODI vice-captain.

IPL 2026 will also present itself as an opportunity for Marco Jansen to cement his place as one of the best all-rounders in the league. The South African troubled batters with his height and awkward bounce last season, however, given his recent improvements with the bat, the 25-year-old will have a big role to play this season.

Threat

One of the biggest threats to their campaign will be untimely injuries to their international pace battery. The likes of Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Arshdeep Singh, Marcus Stoinis and Lockie Ferguson will all be coming into this competition following a long and gruelling international T20 calendar.

Injuries to any one or two of these bowlers at the same time can hurt them big time. Besides, the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Marcus Stoinis and Marco Jansen had already had a history with injuries. Thus, any undue workload can result in losing a key player for the entire tournament.

Another threat to their playoff credentials or possibly a title charge is their dismal form in Mullanpur. During the 2025 season, the Punjab Kings played 10 matches in Mullanpur and had a dreadful record of just 3 wins and 7 losses. Besides, chasing targets was another concern with the team managing to win just 25% of their games while chasing, something they would like to work on in IPL 2026.

Securing playoff qualification shouldn’t be an issue for them, however, getting over that final hurdle will require more than just talent and firepower, and whether they can finally overcome past demons remains to be seen.

Probable XI/XII: Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Shreyas Iyer, Nehal Wadhera, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marcus Stoinis, Sashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal (Impact Sub)
