Is Haaland becoming the new brand favourite in football?

Erling Haaland’s World Cup debut could not have gone any better. The Norwegian striker who had been a pivotal force in their World Cup qualification with a staggering 16 goals in eight games has carried his phenomenal form into the 2026 FIFA World Cup and already scored seven goals in four matches. As a result of his superb performances, Norway managed to reach the quarter-finals, beating former Champions Brazil in the Round of 16 with Haaland scoring an important brace. Although the Vikings lost to England in the quarter-finals, the World Cup witnessed a superstar striker in Norwegian colours.

The Football World Cup is the biggest stage for any top player and if they perform against the best players in the world, it often translates into brands queuing up with massive big money endorsement deals. In the current landscape where social media influence rules the world, Haaland has just taken the world by storm.

The 25-year-old Manchester City striker has particularly become a fan favourite amongst the Americans, even the ones who don’t have much interest in football with his Snapchat and TikTok edits along with his YouTube videos. Haaland has gained more than 16 million Instagram followers in the last fortnight as his reels, memes and videos are flooding the internet. The social media numbers from this tournament are hard to ignore, Haaland gained around 32.1 million Instagram followers during the World Cup and earned 12.9 million followers alone during the knockout stages. He is now sitting at an audience of 73.3 million on Instagram. This has been seen as the highest individual surge for any footballer in that 39-day period. As a result, Haaland has added nearly $700,000 per-post sponsorship value in a span of six weeks.

Haaland seemed to have cracked two of the biggest international markets – China before the World Cup as he is endorsing two big Chinese brands (WALOVI and Midea) and now the USA post the World Cup with several American brands desperate for his signature. While Haaland was already a superstar in Europe, his popularity reached new levels of stardom in the US during the World Cup. American fans have connected as much with his on-field brilliance as with his unguarded, affable and fun personality off the pitch.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has opened the doors for Haaland to become a global cultural icon. The World Cup is the kind of stage that transcends other competitions. Being known well in football engages football fans and therefore the brand associations reflect that kind of audience being interested in sports apparel, shoes or sports drinks. However, the World Cup engages fans who may not be watching football on a regular basis or don’t follow the country or club he plays for. That kind of engagement could broaden the brand portfolio with several other kinds of brands interested in signing him up. Also, the USA is one of the biggest commercial consumer markets where brands spend unbelievably exorbitant amounts of money on sports sponsorships as compared to other regions.

Haaland already has a mixed brand endorsement portfolio that includes a lucrative long-term deal with global American giants Nike, Swiss luxury watch company Breitling, Beats by Dre and Italian luxury house Dolce and Gabbana amongst others. His total yearly earnings amount to $80 million ( $60 million on-field + $20 million in brand endorsements) and according to Forbes, he sits only behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the list of World’s highest paid footballers.  While Ronaldo and Messi are still far ahead but they have had longer and highly successful careers both in terms of individual achievements and silverware with their respective clubs and countries. Also, CR7 and Messi have built their brands over two decades, Haaland is still young and can create his own massive brand value if he continues to achieve consistent numbers along with winning silverware. He was already earning money, now he has the global footprint to surpass his peers in earnings through enormous brand collaborations.

We genuinely believe the 2026 FIFA World Cup has elevated Erling Haaland into an unprecedented social media phenomenon, capturing global attention in ways no one could have imagined. Consequently, leading global American brands would now be eager to capitalize on his rising popularity and influence, leveraging his status as one of the most marketable athletes to strengthen their consumer base. Move over, Ronaldo and Messi, Haaland is coming for the crown as the undeniable brand favourite!
