Jayson Christopher Tatum was born on March 3, 1998, in St. Louis, Missouri. He played with Dukes at college level and was drafted into the NBA by the Boston Celtics in 2017 as the third overall pick. Tatum has played 365 games over five seasons in the NBA and is averaging 20.9 points, 3 assists and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Tatum’s numbers have gone up since 2019, when he started being the centrepiece of the Celtics’ attack and started putting in exceptional stats. His best season has been the 2021-22 campaign, with 26.9 PPG and keeping the Celtics as the #2 seed at the end of the regular season.
After Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown started linking up in the attacking and defensive plays, the duo has almost been unstoppable. This boost has helped Tatum in achieving many accolades, including:
It was speculated from Tatum’s statements that he doesn’t spend any of the money from his NBA salary. But, in 2021, he was among the many athletes who invested in Hyperice, an injury prevention and recovery massager company.
Jayson signed a rookie max-extension deal with the Celtics, which will pay him US$195 million over five years. Jayson made almost double the amount in the 2021-22 season than what he made in his rookie year. Until the 2025-26 season, Tatum will earn around US$35 million per year. He also earns around US$1 million from endorsements.
The Celtics star started the Jayson Tatum Foundation in 2017, through which he has partnered with:
The Jayson Tatum Foundation has also hosted free, one-day basketball and leadership programs (2018-19) in St. Louis, with Tatum having also participated in numerous other charity events in both St. Louis and Boston.
During the COVID pandemic, The Jayson Tatum Foundation pledged to match US$250,000 to help provide meals through Feeding America and The Greater Boston Food Bank in the Boston area.
Tatum is considered one of the most explosive players in the league with great strength in physique, shooting and playmaking. His lockdown defence is covering all his other lack of skills; he might be a legend in the making. Brands have also started to recognise that, and here are some who have successfully acted on it:
Tatum signed with the Jordan brand in the summer of 2019 after being with Nike for one and a half years. He wears Air Jordan 36s during games, and this deal also includes a signature shoe for him, which might be released very soon.
Subway signed a multi-year deal with Jayson in February 2021. The deal had the purpose of showcasing Subway’s numerous foot-long combinations, which is 1.58 billion. Tatum also shared his favourite combination, which is now available at all the American Subway outlets for fans to buy.
Jayson was named Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2016, and since then he has been on the hydration company’s radar. In October 2021, Gatorade aired its commercial on ‘Fuel Your Grind’ or ‘Greatness Starts with G’, which featured Jayson Tatum, showing him consuming the product while grinding for his game.
Tatum partnered with the potato-chip company to help release a new signature chip: Ruffles Flamin’ Hot BBQ. This was the first time Frito-Lay tried the flamin’ flavour.
Tatum starred in an NBA2K22 commercial released in September 2021, alongside Mikey Williams. He is also among the top three candidates to be on the NBA2K23 cover along with Nikola Joki? and Joel Embiid.
Tatum signed with Nike as soon as he was drafted in 2017. He wore some of the company’s exclusive shoes and also was the first player to test out Nike’s HyperAdapt BB. Later, in 2019, he signed with the Jordan brand and is expecting his signature shoe any day now.
