McLaren to permanently honour Ayrton Senna’s legacy

British Formula One team McLaren have announced that their Formula One race cars will permanently feature former McLaren driver Ayrton Senna’s logo from the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix onwards.

Regarded as one of the greatest to have ever raced in Formula One, Senna won all three of his World Championships with McLaren. The announcement of honouring Senna’s legacy came in Monaco, at a place where Senna won a record six times and, starting from the 2022 race weekend, the Senna Foundation logo will be permanently present on the halo of the McLaren race cars.

Following his debut in 1984 with Toleman, Senna moved to McLaren in 1988 and stayed till 1993. During his time with McLaren, Senna won three World Championships and cemented his place as an all-time great of the sport. The Brazilian great was tragically killed during the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.

Speaking about the team permanently honouring Senna, Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, commented:

Ayrton Senna is, and always will be, a McLaren legend. His performances with McLaren, which earned him three Drivers’ World Championships, cemented his place as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers. When he tragically passed away in 1994, the entire motorsport world felt a sense of irreplicable loss, but his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of Formula 1 fans across the world. We feel it’s right that we, as McLaren, should recognise his contribution to our sport by carrying his name with us wherever we go racing.

Starting from the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, the McLaren MCL36 will carry the Senna logo, marking our commitment to celebrate his legacy. I can’t think of a better race than the Monaco Grand Prix to commence this recognition of Ayrton’s life. Having won the Grand Prix six times, more than any other driver, Ayrton proved that his skill and ability behind the wheel of an F1 car could rarely be matched. This addition to our F1 race cars will be permanent, and has been added with the support of the Senna family. It will serve as a constant reminder of Ayrton Senna’s sensational talent for us as a team, and for all our fans around the world.

The Senna Foundation was founded by Ayrton Senna’s sister Vivianne Senna in 1994 and works towards helping young Brazilians prepare for life and provide them with the necessary requirements.
