A mouthwatering clash lies in prospect as Mexico welcome England to their fortress at the Azteca as they look to make the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time since 1986 while England will look to breach a Mexico side that has been virtually invincible at this stadium for a long period of time.
Here is our Preview and Predictions for the game.
So to begin with, after what was a rather chaotic build-up to the fixture where there were serious discussions about changing the kick-off time for the contest by bringing it forward by 6 hours citing fan safety, it has now been confirmed that the kick-off time for the contest will remain unchanged, bringing to an end what was a rather confounding and confusing sequence of events.
Now to the teams. Mexico have slightly gone under the radar, but with every passing game, it is becoming increasingly difficult to understate what they are doing in this World Cup. 4 games. 4 wins. 0 goals conceded. With this run, they become the first team since Italy in the 1990 to have such numbers. They have been a joy to watch this World Cup, blending effective defending with rapid attacks that put their opponents under significant duress.
And then there is their record at the Azteca, making them a much more daunting opposition to face. Such is the impenetrable nature of their record here, that they have lost just 3 games at this ground in the last 56 years. They also boast of an unbeaten record in World Cup games here, winning 7 and drawing 3, scoring 16 and conceding just 2, while keeping 8 clean-sheets in the process.
The Mexican fans have been doing their part as well, making their presence felt both inside and outside the ground, as Ecuador found out to their peril when thousands of Mexican fans stormed their hotel in the middle of the night and blasted out loud music and fireworks.
But the players have been doing their bit with class and poise on the pitch, and they will look to add another scalp to their already overflowing list of victims at the Azteca.
England, meanwhile, are having a rather curious World Cup. Harry Kane is doing Harry Kane as always, with his 5 goals taking him past Gary Lineker as the highest-scoring Englishman in World Cups and level with Just Fontaine in the all-time list. Jude Bellingham has been his usual driving, robust, and busy self as England won their group and eventually edged past DR Congo after falling a goal down early in the game.
But, there are problems. Firstly, England have a full-back injury crisis, with Reece James’ availability for the Mexico game still unclear. Djed Spence has been deputising in his absence but his performances have been highly unconvincing as he faced the wrath of a clearly dismayed Thomas Tuchel mid-game against Congo for his sheer passivity in the game.
Secondly, England have a problem with taking their chances. They are the team that has created the highest number of big chances this World Cup, even more than that absurdly stacked France team, but have managed to convert just 25% of their chances ( 5 out of 20), putting them towards the bottom half of teams still alive in the tournament. And for all of Harry Kane’s brilliance, even he has been guilty of missing 3 big chances.
Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon look clueless when they start, while Noni Madueke is all running and no end product from the other flank. Add to the fact that they will be playing at the Azteca, a stadium that is 7200ft above sea level, this game will pose challenges far beyond the ones that will pose itself on the pitch.
While this has all the makings of a potential banana-skin encounter for the English, it still remains a fact that this England side is much more well-rounded and more talented than the co-hosts, making them the favourites for this clash. Expect a close England win, thereby taking them to the quarters to face either Brazil or Norway.
