Mexico vs South Korea | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction

The Mexico–South Korea bromance has been one of the feel-good stories coming out of the World Cup this year. However, they will be on opposite sides this time when they meet in a Group A clash where the winners will more or less be guaranteed a place in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both Mexico and South Korea were victorious in Group A at the end of their respective campaign openers. While co-hosts Mexico took care of business courtesy of a 2–0 win over South Africa, South Korea registered a come-from-behind 2–1 win over Czechia to get their three points.

El Tri had a great start to the home tournament. They dominated the ball against South Africa, keeping them on their toes, and ran them ragged with their direct style of play. Bafana Bafana could not keep up with their running and direct nature, which will bode well for Mexico against the tougher opponents.

While Mexico will definitely feel that they should have won by more, especially once South Africa were reduced to nine men, they will, nevertheless, be happy with the win and will definitely look for more of the same against their latest opponents.

South Korea will be buoyed by their comeback victory against the Czechs, but there will be some areas of their game that they will be refining on the training ground.

For starters, they were easily outmatched in aerial battles by the Czechs, and that is exactly how they conceded the goal. Despite having the likes of Kim Min-jae, they failed to put any sort of aerial pressure on Czechia and were easily outmatched and outmuscled in the air as well as physically.

Secondly, they will hope that their talisman and star player Son Heung-min had only an off-day in the first game. It was not the best of outings for Son, who was rather wasteful in front of goal and failed to find the net despite having as many as five chances to do so.

However, South Korea will definitely be pleased with the way they came back to win the game. Their technical superiority and passing range mean that they always looked likely to make opportunities for themselves, and both their goals came out of well-crafted passing moves.

This is bound to be a very lively contest. Mexico are known to be a team who rely on a high press, while the Koreans thrive on spaces that can be exploited given that Mexico deploy a high line. Whoever manages to make the most out of those pockets of opportunities will eventually end up winning the game.

This game promises goals and action, so it will be anything but drab. However, we believe that South Korea edge Mexico as favourites for the win here given that Mexico might tend to lose their way emotionally, and that the pressure of being hosts might make the difference against technically superior opposition.
