World Cup contenders Portugal will clash with newcomers Uzbekistan in their second Group K game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 23 at Houston Stadium in Texas.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
Cristiano Ronaldo & Co made an underwhelming start to their World Cup 2026 campaign as they drew 1–1 with the DR Congo, a team returning to the World Cup finals after five decades.
Portugal have one of the best midfield setups at this World Cup with João Neves, Bruno Fernandes, and Vitinha. They also have a strong defence, though their only issue is up front, where they rely heavily on Ronaldo for scoring goals. This was particularly evident in the opening game, as they scored from a set piece through Neves early inside ten minutes but struggled to even create chances after having 75% possession of the ball, Ronaldo having seemingly gone missing. They also conceded as the Congo equalised in first-half stoppage time through Yoane Wissa. Portugal did try to find a winner, but in vain.
As for Uzbekistan, they were defeated 3–1 by Colombia. With this being their first World Cup campaign, their inexperience showed against a strong Colombian outfit. Daniel Muñoz, Luis Díaz, and Jaminton Campaz were on the scoresheet for La Tricolor, while Abbosbek Fayzullayev scored Uzbekistan’s first-ever World Cup goal.
Colombia had 61% possession of the ball and an xG of 1.61 as compared to Uzbekistan’s 1.16, and even though they controlled most of the game, the White Wolves utilised their limited chances very well to score a goal. Colombia led by 2–1 until the 99th minute, when Campaz scored the third and killed the game. Uzbekistan did well to limit Colombia but were ultimately outdone by a far stronger opposition.
Portugal will be overwhelming favourites to win this game, as they have players competing in the top European leagues, while Uzbekistan have a far inferior squad, with not many players having had the experience of playing on the big stage.
After the draw against the DR Congo, this is a massive game for the Seleção das Quinas, one they must win at any cost if they want to proceed to the next round. Coach Roberto Martínez will have to make the required tactical changes and choose the right XI to get all three points.
Led by an experienced Ronaldo, Portugal should be able to rise to the occasion and bag three big points.
Score Prediction: Portugal 3–0 Uzbekistan
