Premier League 2024/25: Gameweek 3 Recap

Gameweek 3 of the 2024/25 Premier League season started in intriguing fashion with Arsenal dropping two points at home against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Reigning champions Manchester City won their away game at West Ham United, while Newcastle beat Spurs in a feisty encounter at St. James’s Park.

Chelsea played out a tame draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge, while Aston Villa grabbed three vital points away at the King Power.

Major drama unfolded at Goodison Park as Bournemouth made the comeback of the season so far, with the gameweek concluding with Liverpool beating rivals Manchester United away at Old Trafford.

Here’s a quick recap of all the Premier League games that were played this weekend.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Arsenal 1-1 Brighton and Hove Albion

Arsenal started superbly at home, scoring a goal through Kai Havertz in the 38th minute and ending the first half strongly. However, their midfielder Declan Rice received a second yellow for a bookable offence a few minutes after restart, which proved beneficial for the Seagulls as they started to attack. Their efforts paid dividends when João Pedro slotted home before the hour mark. Even when down to ten men, Arsenal showed a lot of courage going forward and had a couple of decent chances to win the game but couldn’t capitalise on them.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Nottingham Forest 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Forest drew first blood when an unmarked Chris Wood headed home from a corner kick inside ten minutes. However, Wolves responded almost instantly through a thunder strike from midfielder Jean?Ricner Bellegarde in the 12th minute. Both teams had many chances to win the game, and it was Wood again who came close to snatch a winner for the home team, but his effort was saved well by the Wolves goalkeeper.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Leicester City 1-2 Aston Villa

Villa were the more lively team of the two in the early stages of this game, with Ollie Watkins missing a couple of chances. Their great attacking intent soon saw them score from a brilliant set-piece routine as Amadou Onana tapped home the first goal at the 28th minute. The same momentum continued in the second half, Jhon Durán heading the second goal in the 63rd minute moments after coming off the bench.

Leicester did muster up a couple of chances going forward and got one goal back through a superb volley from Facundo Buonanotte in the 73rd minute, but it wasn’t enough for them to get something from the game.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Ipswich Town 1-1 Fulham

Ipswich started brightly at home and it was their forward Liam Delap who hit an absolute stunner to give them the lead at the 15-minute mark. However, Fulham started to grow into the game and grabbed the equaliser through an Adama Traoré goal in the 32nd minute.

The second half saw Fulham showcase their attacking prowess, but Ipswich defended stoutly and shared the spoils with the Cottagers.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Brentford 3-1 Southampton

Brentford forward Bryan Mbuemo was in fine form as he scored a brace (43′, 65′) to give his side a 2-0 cushion. The Bees dominated the match and eventually grabbed a third through Yohan Wissa in the 69th minute.

However, Saints denied Brentford a clean sheet by getting a consolation goal through Yukinari Sugawara in injury time.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Everton 2-3 Bournemouth

This encounter was hands down the best game of the 2024/25 Premier League season so far. For the majority of the game, it felt like Everton had reversed their fortunes after a dismal two weeks, but the Cherries had other ideas.

The Merseyside Blues started the second half in fine fashion to take a two-goal lead through Michael Keane (50′) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (57′). It seemed like Everton were on their way to three valuable points, but Bournemouth decided to turn the tie around, their first goal coming in the 87th minute through Antoine Semenyo. An inspired Bournemouth then scored through Lewis Cook in the 92nd minute to level the game. But this wasn’t enough for them as Luis Sinisterra headed home from the far post in the 96th minute to snatch all three points for his team.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | West Ham United 1-3 Manchester City

Up against the defending champions, the Hammers started brightly as a Jarred Bowen strike was saved by City goalkeeper Ederson. However, the Cityzens scored their first goal when Erling Haaland capitalised on a defensive error inside ten minutes. Though West Ham equalised through a Rúben Dias own-goal in the 19th minute, Haaland scored another goal in the 30th minute to give City a one-goal advantage at the break.

West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus hit the post early in the second half, but apart from that the home side couldn’t muster many clear-cut chances. Haaland later scored another goal in the 83rd minute, sealing the three points for the title holders.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace

After hammering Wolves last week, Chelsea were expected to build upon the performance and get a comfortable victory at home against a Palace side that have been mediocre at best so far.

The Blues duly opened the scoring through a sweeping counter-attack goal from Nicolas Jackson in the 25th minute. They continued attacking vigorously but failed to find a second. The second half started in the same vein, with Chelsea going all out on attack. However, it was Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze who stunned the Stamford Bridge faithful with a superb equaliser. With both sides going for the win, neither could go on to grab all three points and the game finished at 1-1.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Newcastle United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Tyneside hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for most Premier League clubs of late, and Ange Postecoglou was reminded of the same this time. The game began brilliantly for Spurs, though, who started to dominate but failed to score the opener. Newcastle then found the first goal through Harvey Barnes in the 37th minute and turned the momentum. Spurs kept attacking and did get their well-deserved equaliser at the 78th minute mark through a Dan Burn own-goal from a Brennan Johnson strike. Levelled at 1-1, Spurs attacked even more to find a winner, but a lightning quick counter saw Newcastle forward Alexander Isak grab all three points for the Magpies.

Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 3 | Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool

Playing at Old Trafford is never easy for any team, and Liverpool struggled in the opening few minutes against a lively United side. However, the Merseyside Reds soon started to control the game, winning possession in dangerous areas, and ultimately reaped the rewards when Luis Díaz headed the opener in the 35th minute from a Mo Salah assist. Liverpool scored another goal in the first half from the same duo in the 42nd minute.

Liverpool killed off the tie in the 55th minute via the inevitable Salah, who scored their third. The Red Devils did have some decent chances through new signing Joshua Zirkzee but failed to breach the Liverpool defence, marking a fantastic start for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot with three out of three wins along with three clean sheets.
