Since the start of the new season in the Premier League, there is always a lot of focus and interest around new transfers but it’s equally important to retain the current squad members by offering them a contract extension. It’s important to note that contract extensions for players or managers are not necessitated to be signed in the summer/winter transfer window but can be offered and signed anytime during the season before the contract-expiration.

While there are too many players whose contracts are due to expire in 2025, we are taking a look at 10 players whose departure could affect not just their team but also the Premier League in general –

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City FC)

Kevin De Bruyne is a Central midfielder that plays for Manchester City in the Premier League. He signed for them in 2015 from Wolfsburg FC in the German Bundesliga. He has been Manchester City’s most prolific midfielder and one of their most important players in the past 6-7 years. He has been instrumental in Manchester City’s trophy haul in recent seasons. One of the best players of his generation, the 33-year-old Belgian is due for a contract extension as his contract runs out in the summer of 2025. There have been rumours of a big money move to the Saudi Pro League but nothing has been reported so far. Surely, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City must be working behind the scenes for a contract renewal as he still has much to offer.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool FC)

Mohamed Salah is a Right-winger who plays for Liverpool FC in the Premier League. Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 from AS Roma. He soon endeared himself to the Anfield faithful, scoring an incredible 32 league goals and winning the ‘Premier League Player of the Season’ award in his very first season for Liverpool. In his 8th season now, the talismanic winger is a picture of consistency and fitness having won three PL Golden Boot awards and one Playmaker of the season award, also not missing many games due to injuries. He is not just a Liverpool great but also in line to be called one of the best forwards the Premier League has seen. The 32-year-old Egyptian is due a new contract, otherwise he leaves Anfield next season. Going by his current form, it shouldn’t be a conundrum for Arne Slot and Liverpool as he is still going strong.

Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool FC)

Virgil Van Dijk is a Central defender who plays for Liverpool FC in the Premier League. Van Dijk joined Liverpool in the January transfer window of 2017 from Southampton FC. Since then, he has provided solidity in defense for Liverpool. He was also instrumental in Liverpool winning the Champions League (2018) and the Premier League title (2019). Widely regarded as one of the best Centre-backs of his generation, he has also helped in building attacks and contributed important goals to his team’s success. The 33-yr-old towering Dutchman is the current Captain of both Liverpool and his National team and one player that most Liverpool fans wouldn’t envisage leaving Anfield next season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool FC)

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a Right-back that plays for Liverpool FC in the Premier League. He is a Liverpool academy graduate who rose through the ranks and soon became a first-team regular. Trent possesses a rare skill set for a defender and therefore he has also been deployed in the midfield for club and country. Known for his attacking intent, an incredible passing-range, crossing and set piece goals he is undeniably one of the best right-backs in the world today. The 25-year-old is an important asset for the Liverpool team, also a home-grown player who is the vice-captain right now. Amidst rumours of a move to Real Madrid FC on a free transfer next season, he is one player, Liverpool fans are sweating over and want his contract extension sorted as soon as possible.

Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspurs FC)

Heung-Min Son is a left-winger who plays for Tottenham Hotspurs in the Premier League. He signed for Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2016. Since then, he has made a huge impact on this Spurs side. Known for his pace, ability to link up play and also score a lot of goals and provide assists, he is a world-class footballer. The 32-year-old South Korean is also the captain of both Spurs and his National team. He is still considered as one of the most important players in the Spurs playing eleven and even though he has shown signs of losing pace with age, Son is still producing consistent numbers for his team. He is due a contract extension before next season and it remains to be seen whether the North London club and their manager Ange Postecoglou still believe in his ability to offer him a new contract.

Ivan Toney (Brentford FC)

Ivan Toney is a Striker who signed for Brentford FC in 2020 and helped them get promoted to the Premier League by scoring 31 goals in his first season with them. He has been their most important player since the promotion scoring 20 goals in the 2022/23 season. He has gone through turbulent times as he was found guilty for breach of player betting rules in 2023, which also earned him an 8-months ban from Professional football. He hasn’t featured for them so far in the 2024/25 season amidst rumours of a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League but nothing has been reported so far. The 27-year-old Englishman is one player with whom Brentford wouldn’t want to part ways. However, it remains to be seen whether he moves away or stays in the Premier League.

Amad Diallo (Manchester United FC)

Amad Diallo is a 22-year-old Ivorian footballer who plays for Manchester United as a winger. Amad Diallo came under the radar in the 2023/24 season when he was given opportunities by manager Eric Ten Hag to play in the Manchester United first team. He impressed with his speed, link up play and finishing which prompted the United manager to include him in the 2024/25 pre-season tour. He had a terrific pre-season scoring goals and providing assists, earning him a place in the Manchester United starting lineup. Diallo’s contract is due for renewal before next season and surely, Manchester United wouldn’t want to let go of a young talent who is going to hit his prime soon.

Harry Maguire (Manchester United FC)

Harry Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City FC in 2019 for a whopping £80 million making him the most expensive defender to be signed in the Premier League. In 2020, he was made club captain and he also performed reasonably well for England. However, the big money signing still didn’t live up to expectation as Manchester United has not won a lot of trophies in recent years and their defensive frailties have been the prime reason for poor performances more often. The 31-year-old defender’s contract ends in 2025 and the recent signing of young defender Lenny Yoro indicates ominous signs for the former Man United captain. Though, he does have a one-year extension option in his current deal which can be extended by Manchester United if they want to keep him at Old Trafford for one more season.

Thomas Partey (Arsenal FC)

Thomas Partey is a defensive midfielder who plays for Arsenal FC. He joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atlético Madrid. Since joining, the 31-year-old Ghanaian has had an injury riddled stay with the Gunners, not being able to make the kind of impact he would have liked. The 2023/24 season saw him having persistent injury issues because of which he made only 14 Premier League appearances. Even though Mikel Arteta prefers him over Declan Rice and has given him starts in the 2024/25 season so far, it remains to be seen whether Partey’s injury problems from the previous seasons’ will have an impact on his contract extension or Mikel Arteta rates him highly enough for Arsenal to offer him a renewal.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton FC)

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a striker who plays for Everton FC in the Premier League. He joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016. Since then, he has been a vital player in Everton’s Premier League campaigns. So far, he has scored a total of 68 goals in 250 Club appearances. However, Everton has seen a downfall in their performances in recent seasons with the 2023/24 season being their worst, with them managing to escape relegation narrowly. The 27-year-old could find potential suitors in the Premier League or away. Hence, his contract extension becomes even more important for Sean Dyche and Everton to keep hold of their star player in order to improve their chances of staying in the Premier league next season.
