FIFA WC26 | Ro16: SUI vs COL | 01:30 IST, July 8, 2026

Both teams have been unbeaten in the competition so far, and both of them faced African opponents in the round of 32, with Switzerland facing Algeria and Colombia playing Ghana.

Switzerland were able to win comfortably against an underwhelming Algerian side. Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye were the scorers for the Swiss. With this win, they also managed to win a World Cup knockout tie after a hiatus of 88 years.

Johan Manzambi also impressed, getting an assist; he has been exceptional overall at the tournament with three goals and two assists and is now attracting a lot of interest from top English clubs. Although Algeria had some big chances, they weren’t clinical enough, while Switzerland were sufficiently solid at the back.

In contrast, Colombia had a fighting match against a defensively solid Ghana side. Jhon Arias’s early strike was enough to get La Tricolor through to the round of 16. Luis Díaz also put one past the Ghanaian keeper, but his goal was denied for offside. Díaz was at it again, but a sprawling save from Lawrence Ati Zigi denied Colombia an all-important second goal. Colombia kept Ghana pinned in their own half for most of the first half, so much so that they didn’t have even one shot on target in the first 45 minutes. Colombia were superior in every aspect of the game and deservedly went through.

Díaz and Daniel Muñoz have been key for Colombia in attack throughout the tournament. While the team’s attacking flair has been on display, their defensive solidity has been rarely talked about. The back line, comprising Davinson Sánchez, Jhon Lucumí, Johan Mojica, and Muñoz, has only conceded one goal in four games and will no doubt be tough to break down for the Swiss as well.

Injury-wise, Switzerland could miss Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez due to a muscle injury, while Colombia will miss Jhon Córdoba due to a groin injury.

These two teams last met at the 1994 World Cup, where Colombia got the better of the Swiss. This time around, Los Cafeteros boast a dangerous attack that can trouble the Swiss defence, and their stars Díaz, Jefferson Lerma, Muñoz, and James Rodríguez will be key for them once again. As for the Rossocrociati, captain Granit Xhaka, Manzambi, Rubén Vargas, Ndoye, and Denis Zakaria may prove decisive.

Looking at the two groups of players on paper and their recent form, this is likely to be another tense and tight affair that may go into extra time and then a penalty shootout. At the end of the day, however, we believe Colombia are marginally the better side of the two and will prevail to reach the quarter-finals.

Score Prediction: Switzerland 1–1 Colombia | Colombia to win 4–3 on penalties
Venue: BC Place Vancouver, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
