The Indian Premier League has been successful and popular over the years for a reason. Every season, it throws up surprises as fortune turn every game. From the very first season, when the legendary Shane Warne led a weak and inexperienced Rajasthan Royals side to glory, to the 2023 season that saw an ageing MS Dhoni lead an ageing Chennai Super Kings outfit all the way—each edition has been nothing short of a miracle unfolding in front of our eyes.
This season is turning out to be another surprise package, with former champions like the Mumbai Indians, the Chennai Super Kings, the Kolkata Knight Riders, and the SunRisers Hyderabad languishing at the bottom of the table and the likes of the Delhi Capitals, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Punjab Kings, and the Gujarat Titans flying high early on.
The Titans are sitting pretty at the top of the table with four wins out of five. They did get some big names like Jos Buttler, Glenn Phillips, and Kagiso Rabada in the mega auction, but they have mainly been relying on domestic talent like Sai Sudharsan, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Prasidh Krishna, Rahul Tewatia, and Shahrukh Khan.
The Capitals, meanwhile, have been the revelation of the season, having won all of their four matches. With Rishabh Pant moving to the Lucknow Super Giants, the DC captaincy was handed over to Axar Patel, who has been faultless thus far. During the auction, DC addressed key areas and got the right players for the right price. Now, having found their perfect XI, they’re reaping the rewards.
For the Royal Challengers, it’s been “so near, yet so far” every year since the IPL began. This season, they are flourishing under new captain Rajat Patidar. RCB addressed their major weak points during the auction, procuring Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, and Phil Salt to strengthen their ranks, which has helped them start strong.
Even the Punjab Kings have recruited well, bringing in young Priyansh Arya, captain Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Marco Jansen to bolster their ranks.
In comparison, MI, CSK, and KKR did not fix their issues during the auction, failing to find the right combination. CSK, in particular, didn’t make many marquee signings and are suffering the consequences, with over-dependence on certain players hurting their cause.
KKR are the defending champions but let go of Shreyas Iyer, Phil Salt, and Mitchell Starc from their title-winning side without properly replacing them. While their spin-bowling attack remains decent, their batting has been inconsistent, with the misfiring Andre Russell a huge concern for them.
Both MI and CSK have banked on older players and seem to be lacking both in bowling and batting departments. As a result, not recruiting well and crucial players being out of form are hurting the two five-time IPL winners.
The SunRisers are a strange story, though. The runners-up from last season still boast the most destructive batting lineup on paper, but their batting has been one-dimensional, with most of their batters just looking to hit every ball out of the park. Hence, they have struggled on pitches that offer some help to the bowlers. Additionally, letting go of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Thangarasu Natarajan has weakened their bowling attack, with Pat Cummins being the only threatening presence in the fast-bowling department.
The three reasons that have principally contributed to the tables turning this IPL season are: failing to recognise the players required for strengthening the team, not retaining the important players, and not being able to find the right combination.
It’s still early in the season, however, and we have seen time and again in the IPL that just one win can shift the momentum sufficiently to mount a title charge. There’s plenty of time for teams like MI, CSK, and KKR, who have won the whole thing multiple times, to claw their way back into contention.
For MI and KKR, in particular, there’s reason for optimism. Despite some setbacks, a few of their losses have been tightly contested, suggesting they’re not far off from turning things around. However, CSK and SRH may need to take a hard look at their team selections and tactical approach.
Moreover, CSK losing their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to injury for the season has made their job even harder. Currently, they look like the most beatable team in the league. With a couple more defeats, their season could already be over.
