Be it any sport that has been in existence for a long period, it will comprise numerous stats and records. Since the first international cricket match dates back to 1844, many records have been set and broken since then. The most important records in cricket include – Highest runs, Highest number of wickets, most catches, most centuries, most stumpings etc. in three different formats of cricket namely Test Cricket, One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.
The sport has also evolved over the years with improved fitness, increased pace, aggressive style of play, longevity and hence with each passing year, new milestones are reached and many records are broken.

Joe Root clinches the record for most catches taken in men’s Test cricket
England’s batting lynchpin Joe Root is a classy and consistent batter but he is a more than decent fielder as well. In the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar series, Root broke the record for most catches taken in Test Cricket.
Root now has a total of 213 catches in 158 Test matches where he had taken a maximum of 4 catches in an innings. By reaching this milestone, he surpassed the 13-year long record of Indian batting great Rahul Dravid’s 210 catches in 164 Tests.
Smriti Mandhana becomes the first batter to reach more than 1,000 women’s ODI runs in a calendar year
Indian opener Smriti Mandhana has been in exceptional form this year and in the recently-held World Cup game she achieved a rare feat that no Women’s player had yet managed. With her blistering innings of 86 runs against Australia where India set them a massive total of 330, Mandhana reached the milestone of 1000+ runs in a calendar year in 18 WODI matches with 8 fifties and 4 centuries with an average of 59.
In doing so, Mandhana surpassed a long-standing record of former Australian captain Belinda Clark who scored 997 runs in a calendar year in 1997.
Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes the opener with most 150+ scores in men’s Test cricket before turning 24 years old
Since making his debut in July 2023, the Indian southpaw has shown his class, talent and skill at the top of the order. Not only has he been consistent but his runs have also come at a high strike-rate.
In the recently concluded Test series against West Indies, Yashasvi Jaiswal broke Graeme Smith’s unique record of the most 150+ scores by a player aged under 24 in international Test cricket.
Jaiswal now has 5 150+ scores, surpassing the South African openers record of 4. Also, Jaiswal now has the joint-most centuries (7) by an opening batter before turning 24 alongside Graeme Smith.
India register highest successful chase in a women’s ODI
In the ongoing ODI World Cup Semi-finals, the Indian team pulled off a heist, chasing a mammoth 338 runs and knocking out the defending champions Australia in sensational fashion.
In this World Cup Semi-final game, Australia batted first and with the help of Phoebe Litchfield (119 from 93 balls), Ellyse Perry (77 off 88 balls) and Ashleigh Gardner (63 off 45 balls), Australia set a massive total of 338 for India. However, the much-famed Indian batting didn’t disappoint and with the help of Jemimah Rodrigues’ unbeaten 127 of 134 balls, captain Harmanpreet’s 89 off 88 balls and crucial cameos from Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh India powered towards victory and a world record chase with five wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.
In doing so, they also broke the highest chase record set by this very same opponent a few days back when Australia chased a target of 330 set by India in the group stage.
England record the biggest win by runs in men’s ODI cricket history
The England Men’s Team is known for their hard-hitting and aggressive batting.
In a recent home ODI series against South Africa, England set them a target of a mammoth 415 runs. Joe Root and Jacob Bethell scored centuries while Jamie Smith and Jos Buttler scored quick fifties to end with a massive total of 414/5 in their 50 overs. South Africa wilted under the pressure and were bundled out for a paltry 73 runs in 20.5 overs to lose by the largest margin (342 runs) in ODI cricket.
The previous record was held by India who won by a margin of 317 runs against Sri Lanka in Jan 2023.
Joe Root clinches record for most centuries scored against an opposition at home in men’s Test cricket
England batter Joe Root is known for his consistent and classy batting. Root now has the second-highest career runs in Test cricket and is looking more likely to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record.
Root now holds the record of scoring the most centuries against an opponent in home tests – 9 centuries against India. He achieved this feat in the Anderson-Tendulkar Series when he scored a century in the fourth test at Old Trafford.
The previous record was held by the legendary Australian batsman Don Bradman who had scored 8 centuries against his favourite opposition England.
Mitchell Starc registers the fastest 5-wicket haul in an innings in men’s Test cricket
Australian pace bowling legend, Mitchell Starc broke the record for the fastest 5-wicket haul in Test cricket. In a recent series against West Indies, Starc took 5 West Indian wickets in just 15 balls and ended with figures of 6/9. He also picked up his 400th Test wicket in the process as Australia decimated West Indies in their own backyard, whitewashing them 3-0 in the Three-Test Match Series held in June-July this year.
The previous record was a 5-wicket haul taken in 19 balls which was jointly-held by three bowlers – Ernie Toshack (1947), Stuart Broad (2015) and Scott Boland (2021).
Smriti Mandhana becomes the fastest player to reach 5,000 runs in women’s ODIs
Indian left-handed opener, Smriti Mandhana has ranked amongst the best women batters in the world for a reason. Mandhana has been the epitome of consistency since making her debut in April 2023. This year, not only did she become the first WODI player to reach 1000 runs in a calendar year but she also became the fastest Women’s player to a career 5000 runs in ODI cricket.
She became the second Indian batter after Mithali Raj, and just the fifth batter overall to breach the 5000-run mark in ODIs. However, she reached the milestone in only 112 innings, making her the fastest women’s player to achieve this feat.
In doing so, she overtook West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor who was the previous fastest, having reached 5000 runs in 129 innings.
What is special about this feat is that Mandhana even surpassed Men’s batting greats like Virat Kohli (114 innings), Vivian Richards (114 innings) and David Warner (115 innings) to reach this milestone, hence this achievement ranks at the absolute summit of the records list for this year.
