British Formula One team Williams Racing have announced that Alex Albon will stay with them in 2023 and beyond after the Thai driver signed a multi-year contract extension with the team.
Albon, a member of the Red Bull academy programme, joined Williams in 2022 after George Russell left the team for Mercedes. Albon, who had made his debut with Toro Rosso in 2018, was promoted to the Red Bull main team in 2019, replacing Pierre Gasly, but mediocre performances saw him being demoted to the role of a reserve driver in 2021.
While Williams don’t have a competitive car, Albon has been putting in commendable performances in that car and has both of the team’s points finishes this season in Australia (P10) and Miami (P9).
Jost Capito, CEO and Team Principal, Williams Racing, stated:
“Alex is a tremendous driver and valued member of Williams Racing, so we’re thrilled to be able to confirm we will be working with him on a long-term basis.
“Alex brings a great blend of skill and insightful learnings that will help bring the team greater success in the future. He’s a fierce competitor, has proved a popular and loyal team member and we are delighted that he will provide a stable base for us to continue to develop in this new F1 car era.“
Alex Albon commented:
“It’s really exciting to be staying with Williams Racing for 2023 and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve as a team in the remainder of this season and next year.
“The team is pushing hard to progress, and I am really motivated to continue this journey and further develop our learnings together.“
Albon’s partner for 2023 and beyond hasn’t yet been announced. His current teammate Nicholas Latifi has his contract expiring at the end of the current season, with reports suggesting Williams are looking elsewhere given Latifi’s performances over the last couple of seasons.
Albon’s announcement is the latest during Formula One’s summer break which has already seen a host of action, from Aston Martin signing Fernando Alonso to Alpine and Oscar Piastri contradicting each other over their agreement.
