Former Sauber driver announced as Reserve Driver
Italian Formula One team Ferrari have announced that former Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu will be joining the team as their Reserve Driver for the upcoming 2025 season. The Chinese driver will hold the role along with Antonio Giovinazzi, who already has been a Reserve Driver for the team for the past couple of seasons.
The announcement comes as music to the ears of the Chinese driver, who was left without a seat at the end of the 2024 after Sauber changed their line-up for the 2025 season, removing Zhou and his teammate Valtteri Bottas.
Zhou is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, having spent time there between 2015 and 2018 before being signed by Alfa Romeo in 2022. After three seasons with the team and 68 races, which saw the team rebranded to KICK Sauber, the Chinese driver’s contract was not renewed at the end of the 2024 season. During his time with the Sauber team, Zhou managed to score 16 points.
Zhou’s partner, Antonio Giovinazzi will share the Reserve Driver duties with him with the Italian also racing in the World Endurance Championship in the 51 Ferrari 499P, with which he won previously, taking home the Le Mans 24 Hours 2023 title. Both the drivers will support Ferrari’s main drivers, Charles Leclerc and their marquee new-signing, seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
