IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals SWOT Analysis

In this article, we take a look at the SWOT analysis of 2020 finalists Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season

Strength

Since Shikhar Dhawan’s departure in 2022, Delhi Capitals have struggled for stability at the top of the order. The acquisition of KL Rahul in that regard was a huge upgrade last season. Although the rest of their batters struggled for consistency throughout the campaign, KL Rahul ended the season with 539 runs – with Abishek Porel (301) and Tristan Stubbs (300) being the only other batters to cross the 300-runs mark for DC last season.

Moreover, the 33-year-old wicket-keeper batter has been a consistent run-machine since 2018. Except his second season with the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023 where injuries limited his game time, Rahul has crossed the 500-run mark in every other season – including four instances where he scored 600 or more runs.

Elsewhere, they’ve addressed their middle-order and finishing situation with the addition of David Miller for base price. The lack of output from the middle-order batters and the inability to finish innings strong were one of the reasons why their campaign fizzled out last season. Thus, the addition of an experienced campaigner in David Miller solves both these issues while adding depth with Ashutosh Sharma coming in at #7 followed by Vipraj Nigam.

Besides adding firepower to their middle-order, DC also has one of the best spin bowling contingents in the competition. The trio of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam can stifle any batting lineup on their day while the variations and flexibility they provide to the bowling department is invaluable. While defending runs in a small ground like the Arun Jaitley Stadium is challenging, all three are genuine wicket-takers and will be crucial to DC challenging for the playoffs.

Weakness

For all the good work KL Rahul has done opening the batting for DC – this team still doesn’t have a fixed top 3 on paper. They have Abishek Porel who hasn’t been able to upgrade himself from a 300-runs-a-season player to someone who regularly hits 400-450 runs while they’ve brought in replacements like Prithvi Shaw and experienced international openers Ben Duckett and Pathum Nissanka. Besides, Nitish Rana batting at #3 also didn’t have a great 2025 season and thus despite yet another smart auction by the DC management, they’re still not clear enough on who their best top 3 batters are.

Similar to last season, DC still have flexibility issues with their squad – allowing them only six bowling options without compromising the balance of the playing XI/XII. Besides, they also lack good Indian seamers with both Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan getting found out in recent seasons.

Mukesh played 12 games for DC last season, picking up 12 wickets at an economy of 10.33 while Natarajan played just the one game with recurring injuries limiting his game time considerably. Although both bowlers have looked in decent form during this season’s SMAT, with both bowlers on the wrong side of 30 and a history of injuries, DC will be playing a dangerous game of chicken.

Opportunity

While uncertainty and chaos come hand in hand, it also brings opportunities for those who dare to take this challenge head-on. With two of the top 3 slots still up for grabs, it’s an opportunity for certain individuals to put their hands up and make those positions their own.

Despite average returns in his last two seasons with DC, the incumbent Abishek Porel should start the season as their first choice opener alongside KL Rahul. However, if things don’t work out for him, they can also go with a Prithvi Shaw who’s got some runs behind his back in SMAT while both Duckett and Nissanka are in reserve, but bringing one of them into their playing XI means missing out on a Lungi Ngidi – which will further weaken their bowling attack.

That said, their find from last season, Vipraj Nigam has been in excellent form in domestic cricket this season. The 21-year-old added crucial runs lower down the order – scoring 142 runs while picking up 10 wickets in his debut campaign. Thus, with both Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav not looking in the best of forms, a great 2026 season will push him in contention for a place in the Indian T20 side.

Threat

Delhi Capitals’ biggest threat to their playoff aspirations are they themselves. They’ve assembled an excellent squad but getting the best out of this squad and finding their best playing XI will be the biggest challenge. However, as history has taught us, Delhi’s restlessness and lack of clarity on player positions and roles has bit then back quite a few times.

Moreover, their dependency on certain domestic players can derail their campaign if things don’t work out. Both Abishek Porel and Nitish Rana have a lot to prove while, as highlighted earlier, their Indian fast bowling contingency isn’t up to scratch either and new INR 8.4 crore signing Auqib Nabi has to hit the ground running for DC witn both Mukesh and Natarajan well past their prime at least in T20 cricket.

Despite possessing one of the best squads in the tournament, there are certain areas of their game that need refining. Thus, we expect another inconsistent season from the Capitals with the team narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

Probable XII: KL Rahul, Abhishek Porel, Nitish Rana, Tristan Stubbs, Axar Patel, David Miller, Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, Auqib Dar/T Natarajan (Impact Sub)
