And then there were two as we come down to the final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 with defending champions Sri Lanka stealing a win from under the noses of Sri Lanka to make their way to back-to-back finals. The final will be a repeat of the last edition as India will be looking to go one better.

After an entire tournament of not clicking, the Indian middle order finally got some runs and time in the middle in the semi-final encounter against Bangladesh as Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma all got crucial contributions to help India get to a respectable score. Shafali Verma remains India’s stand-out batter, having provided quick starts in almost every game and she has allowed Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal to play themselves in. While the reliance on the top order remains, runs from the middle order, despite Kaur having a scratchy innings will be a welcome sign with the Indian management hoping the middle order fires one more time, in the final.
The Indian spinners have been carrying their team and the spin trio of Deepti Sharma, Shree Charani and Prema Rawat have not only regularly been amongst the wickets but been miserly as well. As the tournament has gone by, the wickets have become slower and more assistive to the spinners and it has worked perfectly in the favour of the Indian bowlers. While the Indian spinners have been doing the heavy-lifting, the seamers of Kranti Gaud and Nandani Sharma have been brilliant with the new ball as well, keeping things tight and picking up the early wicket which has put the opponent’s under pressure early on and also helped the spinners have a go at non-set batters.
The defending champions, Sri Lanka, like India are unbeaten in the tournament and have been mainly carried to the final by their bowlers. The Sri Lankan batters haven’t made any big innings, with the team’s highest score being 134, which they made in the semi-finals. The Sri Lankan spinners, Chamudi Praboda, Sugandika Kumari and their captain Chamari Athapaththu have been keeping things tight in the middle overs while the seam duo of Mithali Ayodhya and Chethana Vimukthi have stepped up with the new ball.
Barring their opening game against UAE, where Imesha Dulani and Athapaththu put up a 57-run opening partnership stand, the Sri Lankan batters have struggled on slow and turning conditions throughout the event. The top and middle order have not clicked together yet with a lone half century from Nilakshika Silva in the lower order being the highest score for the Lankan women this tournament. The positive sign will be their experienced batter Harshitha Samarawickrama getting some runs in the semi-final to see the Lankans home along with Kavisha Dilhari also getting crucial runs in the middle order. The top order is yet to fire and the Sri Lankan camp and their captain Athapththu herself know that if they want to defend their title, they have to step up with the bat.
Having on one ground itself, the wicket and the outfield as well have gotten slower as the tournament has progressed and it will be the slower and spin bowlers who will benefit from this in the final. Most of the games have been low scoring encounters and unless India’s top order can provide a quick start, we should be in for another low scoring game dominated by the bowlers as two teams with strong spin attacks and struggling batting units go up against each other. Sri Lanka might be the defending champions but it is India who come in as the favourites, given their stronger batting attack.
