After being put to bat first, the hosts were in a spot of bother at 58/3 in the eighth over before a crucial partnership between captain Charith Asalanka and Kamindu Mendis bailed them out. Sri Lanka looked all set for a total close to 200, but a late Windies comeback restricted them to under 180.
Sri Lanka’s bowling turned out to be woeful in the second innings as Brandon King and Evin Lewis’ 107-run opening partnership saw the hosts take the game away from the hosts before Sherfane Rutherford and Rovam Powell saw the team home in the final over.
For the visitors, Lewis and King did the heavy-lifting with the bat while everyone chipped in with the ball. Shamar Joseph was their most economical bowler, going under seven an over.
In the second game, Sri Lanka will want a quick turnaround, with most of their other batters getting starts but not capitalising on it. With the ball, they were very ordinary as King and Lewis smashed them all over the park. Only Matheesha Pathirana troubled the batters, picking up 2/27. Kamindu Mendis’ bowling stint will give Asalanka some hope knowing he has an extra option.
With the second T20I taking place once again in Dambulla, we should be in for a high-scoring game on a track made for the format’s big hitting. Expect another run fest as we hand the West Indies the advantage to win the game and also close out the series.
